Archive Predictions: Pesky Pirate Alert
It’s time to go on the record with my predictions for the upcoming 2009 baseball season. As usual, I don’t encourage anyone to take this valuable knowledge and use it for personal gain. But, ummm, if you do, don’t forget my typical 15% cut. *wink-wink*

A few notes…
- The Pittsburgh Pirates are the big surprise team of the NL and baseball fans across the nation start to root for the Bucs to eclipse that .500 mark, which they do by 2 games!
- A-Rod returns a few days earlier than expected, but is reinjured in mid June and is out for the year.
- George Steinbrenner has a horrible year health-wise and stress from the struggling Yankees is believed to be a major contributing factor.
- Matt Holliday wins the MVP and is almost traded at the deadline.
- The San Francisco Giants get extremely hot in May, lead the NL West by 7 games, national media credits their staff as the best in baseball before the team struggles big time in August and September, falls out of the race.
- Carl Crawford wins AL Comeback Player of the Year, sets career highs in RBIs and Runs.
- Adam Wainwright wins NL Cy Young, even after bullpen blows 4 wins for him.
I’m still working on my MIPs list, so look for that later in the week. What’s an MIP? A Most Intriquing Player, of course.
Double Draft Day
I have two, count’m two, big drafts today! First up will by my 15-team NFBC draft that I am co-owning with fellow J.A.I.L. participant and friend Ward Pettenger. We had nice “war room” meeting via the cell phone last night and we have a few tricks up our sleeves!
If you’ve never co-owned a fantasy sports team before I highly recommend it! If you don’t believe me I encourage you pick up the book, Fantasyland, written by Sam Walker. Just reading about the fun times Sam and his crew had during the course of the season as they competed in the highly-regarded Tout Wars fantasy baseball league should convince you.
Sure, you have to compromise on some of your own strategy. But it’s well worth it knowing there is someone else rooting for your team as passionately as you are. Plus, you have an automatic excuse to reject lame trade offers without worrying about being rude, you can always blame your partner. Plus, if you pass on a trade that would have ended up helping your team, again, you can blame your co-owner for vetoing the deal. See, you’re covered either way!
I’m not saying you should always have a partner in crime, but I strongly suggest teaming up with a buddy at least one team each season. Sometimes, owners who have varying styles actually make a good team, so don’t worry about finding a fantasy clone. At the same time, you don’t want to be fighting over every FAAB acquisition, so at least have a good line of communication with your compadre.
The second draft today is my FSWA members only draft. This will be my first and only draft held at ESPN.com. I like to have a team in most of the major Internet sites so I can relate to questions I get emailed to me from various styles of fantasy that are out there.
Speaking of email questions, let me answer a couple I got recently.

Johnny,
I can really use some draft advice. I have a draft on Sunday, the league I won last year. It’s a Roto 5X5. I have pick 13 and pick 16, it’s a 14-team league. I don’t know who my 1st 2 picks should be? Here is how I think the draft will go with all the league talk. First 12 picks; H Ramirez, Pujols, Wright, Reyes, Sizemore, Cabrera, Braun, Hamilton, Utley, Rollins, Howard, Teixeira. I got screwed with the Arod injury, I’m not taking Arod or Santana, pick 14 would probably be Santana or Beltran if I don’t take either at 13. Who should be my 13th? Holliday, Beltran? Or is there a player I should take that I’m missing, if I pass on Beltran I should have kinsler if I want at pick 16. Any advice on who I should take at 13 and 16 would be great. I hope you have been doing well. I will catch your next show soon.
Shack
Hey Shack,
Good to hear from you. Assuming you are sure those are the players that will be gone before you pick at #13, I will give you my thoughts. Since you don’t want Johan at #13, I assume you don’t want the other SP who has been creeping up the ADP around that spot, Giant SP Tim Lincecum. Which is good actually, as I think there is a good chance there will be alot of remorseful people who have consumed the Lincecum Kool-Aid this year. I’m not saying he isn’t talented, but for fantasy I think he represents too much risk for a 1st round selection.
The player you don’t seem enthused about, but probably should be taken at #13 if he’s there is OAK OF Matt Holliday. I know he’s been dropping like a rock in ADP and everyone thinks his post-Coors career is doomed. But how quickly we all forget the lessons of fantasy. Remember the last time people wrote off an elite player because they were leaving a good hitters park? Yeah, I’m talking about Alfonso Soriano, the 40-40 guy who won alot of people their leagues in his first year in Washington, after leaving Arlington.
In a banged-up off year for him in 2008 he doubled his SB number 28, hit .321 and jacked 25 bombs. Sure, his RBIs were a bit low at 88, but he more than made up for the power shortage with those extra steals. I say take this 29-year-old stud who was being drafted routinely in the top 5 last year and grin all year as he continues to be one an elite fantasy player.
At #16, you definitely have alot of options. I certianly think it’s nice to get well-rounded players who give you mulitple stats, like a Carlos Beltran. I’ll toss out another Carlos you might want to think about — and keep this a secret because Ward and I are planning on taking this guy in our draft today in the NFBC — HOU OF Carlos Lee. Remember last year, before the entire Astros organization walked under a ladder and ran into a truckload of bad luck, this guy was putting up a MVP type year. In 436 ABs, he hit .314, 28 HR, 100 RBI, and stole 4 bases. Imagine another 150 or ABs on top of those numbers?! He’s rated #16 in ADP at ESPN, so somebody is giving him some love. He’s not flashy, but plays in a nice home park and is consistant.
A couple of other names to ponder, A.Soriano — seems he primed for another of big years. Ian Kinsler — we’re all still waiting to see what a full season of stats looks like form this kid, but if ’09 is the year we see it, you’ll want him on your roster.
Okay, time for one more question.
Johnny,
I really enjoy listening to your podcasts. I listen to them on my Monday morning commute to work. Can’t wait to hear the Jeff Erickson interview. He is fast becoming one of my favorite people to listen to.
Anyway, my drafts are this weekend and I’m in two different 20 team, keeper, head to head, points leagues. Instead of drafting individual pitchers, we draft team pitching staffs (this includes the starting rotation and bullpen) The only category we use for pitching is E.R.A. The only difference between the two leagues is that league #2 is a salary league (we use real salaries for the hitters) while league #1 is not. I was hoping you could rank the staffs for each of my two leagues, but if that is too much too ask, if you could maybe just give me your top five from each league and maybe one sleeper team also. Thanks in advance!

One-On-One With Keith Olbermann
In this special edition of the blog I will go in depth with fellow MLBlogs writer Keith Olbermann — who recently began his blog. As some of you may know, Olbermann has participated in fantasy baseball for years dating back to when it was not as socially acceptable as it is now. I know, fantasy sports are still not exactly considered “cool,” but it wasn’t that long ago that it was known exclusively as a “dork” or “nerd” activity.
The name of Keith’s blog? The Baseball Nerd. See, I told you. He’s not at all ashamed of his fantasy baseball heritage. In fact, he’s proud of it, as he should be.
And yes, this is the guy who used to work as the sportscaster in So. Cal., worked at ESPN and now does some show at MSNBC that has to with counting or something. But I encourage everyone to treat him as just another baseball fan when reading his blog and especially if you are going to post a comment to him.
Keith respects the game and its history, so let’s show respect to him. It’s true, that may be easier for those of us that geniunely enjoy the programming at MSNBC, but again we are all here because we love baseball.
OK, with that out of the way, let’s get into my exclusive, one-on-one interview with Keith on fantasy sports. I guess I should explain exactly what I mean by “exclusive, one-on-one interview.” Basically, I posted a question to his blog on Wed. (3/25/09) and he was nice enough to answer it yesterday (03/26/09) in his post.
Now, he didn’t address me by name when responding, but instead quoted Billy Crystal in saying “and you know who you are.” So, in a stalking, twisted manner, I have taken his reply as an exceptional compliment and endorsement of me as a fantasy writer and human being. If you are a fan of the Flight of the Conchords, then you can picture me as that obsessed female fan, Mel, who follows Bret and Jemaine around.
But hey, I was the only one who asked him about fantasy baseball, so he had to be talking to me when he discussed fantasy, right?! Glad you agree…
Alright, here we go. Picture me and Keith Olbermann sitting opposite each other at a large table that is covered with statistical papers and books. Keith looks a little nervous, because after all he is staring down the world-famous Johnny Archive (your hero!) and he has no idea about the grilling he is about to endure. Sure, he’s been seen by millions and has an extensive resume of T.V. projects – including launching the ESPN 2 network, while sporting a cool leather jacket, with Suzy Kolber.
I waste no time and fire my first question.
JA – I’m curious, with your schedule these days, how many fantasy baseball leagues do you participate in?
Still a bit unsettled, he responds.
KO – I actually retired from Fantasy Ball in 1995 for fear of having to draft a line-up of UPS Drivers. Got talked back into it in 2007 by my friend Jason Bateman, then played football in his league that year. The rust having been shaken off, I won them both last year (NL-only, six-by-six format, no freezes, Jason likes to count Holds for goodness sakes). This year I’m co-owning an AL-only team in a league with some of the ESPN experts. I take this way too seriously (the league that went out of business in 1994 had 40-man rosters and we actually held a two-round amateur draft two weeks ahead of the actual MLB draft).
I have to admit, I was expecting some name-dropping, but who would have guessed that Jason Bateman would be the celeb’ thrown back at me and was such a big fantasy fan!?
Anyway, I came right back at him with the second question!
JA – I know you’ve been in leagues for years, I’d love to know your thoughts on the fantasy sports industry overall?
He just stared at me. At this point, I began to wilt under the pressure! For the love of God, this is Keith bleepin’ Olbermann I’m talking to here!!! He has a very scary stare, man. Just ask Bill Maher, the host of Real Time on HBO. When Olbermann was on his show last week, Maher had him sit on the side of him so he wouldn’t have to make eye contact with him.
KO – I take this way too seriously (the league that went out of business in 1994 had 40-man rosters and we actually held a two-round amateur draft two weeks ahead of the actual MLB draft).
Then he went right back to staring, maybe even glaring at me!
So, after a few seconds of ”the stare” as I will now call it, I quickly moved on to my third and final question. I know, three questions is a bit lame for an “in-depth, grilling,” but I was totally sceered of him. Hey, he’s a big guy! I mean, I was busy with other things and couldn’t spend all day with this interview, ya’ know.
JA – Maybe you could share some of your fantasy sleepers for ’09?! I asked, sheepishly and yet defiantly!
It was at this point that I could see a twinkle in Olbermann’s eye. Yep, he was starting to gain a level of respect for the ol’ Archiver! It was as if he realized in the fantasy world I was somehow his equal. He knew I had talent and he appreciated that. Though he seemed to take a peek at my belly as he spoke.
KO – I’m better now but I still can’t imagine giving away my sleepers, at least until after the draft Sunday. I will say this, if it’s of any use: I saw Albert Pujols in Clearwater ten days ago and he looked 100% healthy for the first time in years. And no hint of a paunch. And I know my paunches.
And with that, I got up and ran from the room like a little school girl who just heard the bell for recess. I didn’t appreciate the paunch reference, but hey, I wasn’t going to say anything to him about it! I did a write down the inside information on this Albert Pujols dude. Seems it could come in useful at some point.
So, there ya go. A total make-believe interview for your reading enjoyment. In all seriousness, I do want to thank Keith for answering my questions about fantasy on his blog. Just having high-profile “cool” people semi-endorse fantasy sports helps the general public to regard it in a more respectable manner.

Snip-Snip: Putting Up My Jewels
We’ve all heard the expression “walking the walk” and most of us know that it basically means backing up what you say and living by what you preach. Some radio show hosts have even been known to literally state they’d walk to certain cities if their predictions didn’t come true. Though, most don’t actually do the walking when they are wrong. Weak!
I have just signed up for the online edition of the NFBC which will draft Saturday April 4th at 4pm ET and I guarantee I will win! I am so confident that I will win that I am willing to walk the walk with my fantasy strategies and back up my bold proclamation!!! What will I do if I don’t win?
I will undergo a vasectomy if I do not win!!! Yes, I am basically putting my boys on the line here. Now, I’d say I’m all in with this competition! I’ll update everyone all year as to my progress and even post the medical proof, if I should not win the league.
This will be a very difficult league and I mean no disrespect to any member of the league, but I felt I needed to lead by example. With so many so-called experts out there spewing their expertise and stating they know what’s going to happen I wanted be someone who wasn’t worried about walking the walk and believing in myself!
Okay, well I better get back to my research…

Good News, Bad News 03/25/09
It’s time for your weekly voyage into humor wonderland! Buckle up! Here we goooooo…
Good News – The newest celebrity to start doing a blog here at MLBlogs is MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann.
Bad News – Right wingers now have a new venue to attack poor Mr. Olbermann. Something tells me he can handle it, though.
Good News – The new MLB Network is going to have it’s first fantasy baseball show this weekend!
Bad News – As I’ve watched the coverage of the startup network devoted entirely to baseball the past few weeks there has been very little time devoted to fantasy baseball.
Good News - My 1st grader has entered a tardy-free period for the next few days.
Bad News – The school, which is the newest in the district, is dealing with a bat problem!
Good News – With the recent retirement of Curt Schilling there has been collateral attention given to fellow strikeout pitcher Bert Blyleven who has just missed out on Hall of Fame for the past several years.
Bad News – There’s still an argument from several voters that neither player should or will make the Hall of Fame.
Good News – The Houston Astros have not lost a game in spring training since they signed Pudge Rodriguez.
Bad News – Wins in spring training mean absolutely didly.
Good News – Back to the MLB Network for a second; They continue to show spring training games live, for instance today they will show 2 games.
Bad News – Why am I paying for the MLB.TV package to get spring training games on my computer when I can watch the same games on my plasma for free on MLB Network?
Good News – I had a fun – but busy — schedule this past weekend as I did 3 podcasts, including portions of 2 live drafts.
Bad News – I don’t do such a good job juggling all the baseball productions I am responsible for these days and the blog sometimes suffers when I get overloaded.
Good News – Sweet Lou Pinella will be announcing his decision later this week on who (Carlos Marmol or Kevin Gregg) will close games to start the season in Chicago.
Bad News – Pinella still hates pitchers and whoever starts the season as the closer is by no means a lock to complete the season in that role.
Good News – Even with both New York area teams opening up new ballparks in the midst of a horrible financial crisis you have to feel they will someone make it through okay.
Bad News – If the tough times to let up by next year you have to wonder if Minnesota will also be able to endure such bad timing with their new stadium.
Good News – Chris Carpenter, who has missed most of the past 2 years with injuries, has yet to give up a run in 19 innings this spring.
Bad News – If ”Carp” is unable to pitch well when the games mean something the Cardinals will once again be counting on Kyle Lohse and Todd Wellemeyer to pitch crucial games for them.
Have a great day!

Yahoooooo
Hey there gang. Here’s the results of a very casual Yahoo league I did. There are some questionable picks, but I think this is the sort of draft you can expect if you do a free league on a major site. It’s a good reminder that there are alot of people who participate in fantasy sports just for the joy of the game and will openly draft players they like for reasons other then just their stats.
Pretty-much all the players I expected to be available at the end of the first round were gone, so I went with Jimmy Rollins. Getting A-Rod in the 4th is definitely a gamble, but I think at point it was worth it. I imagine by the time I would have picked again in round #5 he would have been gone.
It’s amazing how I seem to end up with Soriano in every draft! He better have a decent year! I’m sure you can figure out which team is mine, so here is the draft.

Good News, Bad News 03/19/09
Let’s get right into it…
Good News – Spring officially begins on Friday!
Bad News – Opening day is still weeks away.
Good News – Geico has introduced another pitch man, a stack of money with some fake eyes on top, along with a catchy song.
Bad News – The Caveman and the british-speaking-lizard are not happy.
Good News – I’m finally reading the fantasy baseball classic book, Fantasyland.
Bad News – There are several references to the lack of respect that fantasiers get from real baseball people.
Good News – My contacts within the fantasy baseball world continues to grow each week.
Bad News – With all these great new friends comes much more time on the phone and less time for writing — yes, that should sound like an excuse for slacking on the blog lately.
Good News – Kevin Youkilis’s injury doesn’t appear to be too serious.
Bad News – I wonder how many USA players got beat up in that massive dogpile after winning that game in the 9th inning the other day?
Good News – The Texas Rangers have a chance to make a move this year in the AL West.
Bad News – If the Rangers don’t improve in ’09, could be the end of the line for all upper management positions, including Nolan Ryan.
Good News – I don’t think the Jay Cutler situation can get any worse for the Denver Broncos.
Bad News – The Broncos don’t seem to realize they probably have the perfect envoy to dispatch to resolve this matter in John Elway.
Good News – President Obama will appear on the Tonight Show this evening.
Bad News – Might not be the best time to go on a light-hearted show and look like he’s having fun out on the west coast.
Good News – Everyone seems fixed on recouping this money being paid out in bonuses to companies getting TARP money.
Bad News – It’s turning into a mob-mentality situation with even members of Congress calling for people to commit suicide.
Good News – Joe Lano got his Snuggie for winning the first Jailbreak of the ’09 season.
Bad News – Soon it may be too warm for Joe to wear his new fancy piece of clothing.
Good News – We have another great guest, Cory Schwartz of MLB.com, scheduled this week on The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show!
Bad News – The show is only an hour long and there’s much to talk about with Cory!
Sorry for getting this up a day late, but we gave a 20% discount.
Have a great day!

Wide World of Sports
*imagine the old ABC Sports theme playing in the background*
*oh ya, also imagine seeing the skier taking that massive spill*
Today I will be spanning the globe to give my opinions on many, many different sports — well two anyway. But, before I do, I want to thank Bob Sikon of FantasyBaseballTradeMarket.com for being my guest on The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show yesterday. Some of you may know him as Bob in Cleveland. Also, I can’t tell you all how much I appreciate everyone who is checking out the show live and on the archives at iTunes.com. The numbers are tripled from last year and growing just about each and every show!!!
Who will be on the show this Sunday? None other then Cory Schwartz of MLB.com and the Fantasy 411!!!! Tune in as we talk about his NFBC team and the entire fantasy baseball industry. You’ll be able to ask questions in the chatroom or call and join in on the conversation. Just head over to BlogTalkRadio.com and search for Johnny Archive or follow the link just over to the right of your screen.
Okay, first off let’s talk about College Hoops. Here’s my final four picks and results!
Midwest – Wake Forest
West – Memphis
East – Florida State
South – North Carolina
Finals Memphis vs. Florida State
Winner – Memphis
If you use this information for wagering purposes, I must insist you donate some of your winnings to a local charity and of course send me my typical 20% cut! You don’t want a visit from my buddies, Rocko and Bruto, who handle my “collection” issues.
Florida State is perhaps the most overlooked team in the country. Memphis will use the snub they got by not being a #1 seed to their benefit as they cruise to the title.
Now, let’s go to the NFL. I can’t believe the players association went outside the family to choose new labor leader, DeMaurice Smith. There were several former players who wanted the position, including Troy Vincent. I have a feeling this will not work out well, I’m just saying.
Here’s an idea, the Broncos should trade disgruntled QB Jay Cutler to the Eagles for Donovan McNabb who I don’t think is especially thrilled about spending his entire career in the city of brotherly love. Cutler is a head case and now that he is emotionally detached from not only the Broncos, but the city itself (he and his parents have put their homes up for sale), he’ll never fulfill his potential there and the fans won’t want him there anyway.
Matt Jones, former WR for the Jaguars, was released today after failing to adhere to his treatment program that forbid him from consuming alcohol — which he did while out playing golf – after being caught with cocaine. I never thought he was a smart 1st round draft choice since he was a college QB and the Jags were planning on switching his position as soon as he reported to camp. I can’t think of many players who have successfully made that sort of switch and why organizations would risk their #1 pick on such a risky move is beyond me.
Just think, the Jags have been a pretty good team the last few years. Imagine if they had a different, productive player out of that pick they used on Jones? What a waste. I think all professional sports teams should employ an experienced fantasy sports owners as a draft consultant. I nominate myself as the first. C’mon, fantasy owners are skilled drafters, it’s a proven fact!
Okay, I have to toss in some baseball. The Astros added Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez to their roster today with a 1 year, 1.5 million dollar deal. Good move. I reported on my podcast yesterday that I thought the ‘Stros should do this and probably would. Another scoop!
That’s a wrap!

Draft Dodging: How To Have A Good Draft
Do you feel a draft? Yeah, me too. It’s that breezy time of year when we are all experiencing fantasy baseball drafts. You probably like to have your abode air-tight and safe from the elements, but what about your draft preparation? And nooo, I’m not talking about doing 1500 mock drafts, though making a mockery of your self does have its time and place. Just like spontaneity. Get it? You can’t plaaaan spontaneity…oh, nevermind.
Annnywaaaay, you’re about to embark on a journey that will last 6 months and could bring wealth and reward beyond your wildest dreams! So, is it really asking too much to spend a little effort properly preparing for the big dance, the draft? Okay, good.
Now, perhaps you are not exactly sure what you need to do to get yourself transformed into a state of total wellness. I’m talking about inner peace and calmness unlike anything you’ve ever even pondered before. You need to become a lean, mean, drafting machine! *picture Bill Murray urging on the chubby kid during the hot dog eating contest in the movie, Meatballs!*
No worries, bro-ham. Johnny Archive’s gotchya back. I mean, I will assist as you dive into transcendence and total bliss. Now, before we begin, please go ignite approximately 50 candles, preferably white and in varying sizes, all around the room in which your computer is located. Huh? No candles, alright then turn off the lights or at least squint for a second and pretend there is flickering lumination surrounding you.
Deep Draft Prep by Johnny Archive
- Get some alone time – Free yourself of children, parents, spouses, girl/boy friends. Sometimes it’s best to let your significant others know how important these few hours are to you. Perhaps offer to take them out to dinner if they allow this precious time. Maybe offer to do that project around the house you’ve been putting off or go to that movie they really want to see that you find torturous. If all else fails, cash is always king!
- Know your league rules – I know, reading the league rules is like reading the directions on the back of a new bottle of shampoo, but it really is important. Nothing like constructing this flawless plan to punt Starting Pitching only to discover after the draft there is a minimum innings rule and the only starters available are Livan Hernandez, Eric Milton and Kenny Rogers. Eeewwww!!!
- Do a mock draft at the site of your league – There are a lot of places to do mock drafts these days. MockDraftCentral.com for example is great, but if your league doesn’t use MDC.com for your real draft it won’t do you much good. You will be at a real disadvantage if you are not familiar with the draftroom setup and process of your league’s site. Nothing like accidentally drafting Ryan Braun the pitcher instead of the stud OF in round #1 because you didn’t know how to sort the players properly.
- Don’t drink & draft – That includes other mind-altering substances as well. Should be obvious as to “why.” But just to make sure, drafts last about 2 hours and if you polish off a 12-pack in that time, your last 3 picks might wind up being Livan Hernandez, Eric Milton and Kenny Rogers. Eeewwww!!!
- Don’t overload yourself with data – You might turn into the blue screen of death! Seriously, there’s no need to to have 12 magazines, 8 cheat sheets, 120 different colored highlighters and 15 browsers open on a pc and 2 laptops plus 45 stickies surrounding your monitor. Clutter-free, is the way to be!
- Prerank your players and use your que – Have players in your que at all times. This is a component of knowing the draftroom of your site, as you need to know how to properly put players in the que. I don’t care how great your computer is, there is always a chance something could happen to cause you to lag or lose connection to the draftroom and if you don’t have a player you want in your que, you may get Jeff Francis as your top SP in round #5. Preranking your players, especially your sleepers, will make it much easier to find these winners during the draft.
- Follow the 5-second rule – Don’t let the timer get below 5 seconds before you make your pick. You run a major chance that you will get an auto-picked player if you get below 5 seconds. Then in some leagues, once you have a player auto-picked the software thinks you are gone and then automatically auto-drafts your next player unless you manually turn off the autopick feature.
- Create a wish list – Write down a list of the players you really have an eye on this year, especailly if you think they are going to be big time sleepers and/or difficult to find during the draft. You don’t want to spend your entire alotted draft time searching for Giant Outfielders because you forgot the name Fred Lewis. Players coming over from Japan are sometimes very difficult to find, for example.
- Have a basic plan – Every draft is different, but if you know you are going to wait on C and 1B until the middle to late rounds and draft OF and 2B early you can get a feel for how the draft is shaking out and be ready to adjust your strategy on the fly. Plus, having a plan will allow you to spot players who are dropping and represent solid value for where they are currently available.
- Be a Steady Eddie – Don’t be distracted by the ****-chat in the draftroom, the picks of another owner, or an auto-picked player for your team. Stuff happens; don’t be so frantic by something unexpected that you allow yourself to miss out on a player dropping 2 rounds further than you think he should go.
- Observe other owners – Also known as the 3-O maneuver! Even in a chatroom setting, you can tell a lot about your opponents. Sometimes their team name or their team logo can give you an idea about their home town or favorite team. Watch to see if certain owners take popular players from specific teams a little higher than they are valued. Information like that can help during the season when it comes to trade talks, faab money and/or waiver wire moves.
- Be polite and have fun – The draft is the first time the rest of the league will get a feel for who you are. Don’t be overly talkative in the chatroom, but don’t ignore people either if you can help it. The draft is a good time to start cultivating relationships for future trade talks. Don’t be “the jerk” who thought he was too good for everyone at the draft or the guy who wouldn’t shut up! And don’t defend your picks to anyone during the draft. A simple “lol” can actually be more than enough of a response.
Okay, there you have it. I’ll try and add to it if I can think of anything else or remember something I missed from last year. If you can think of something, please contribute!
Bye-Bye

I’ll Never Draft That Guy Again!
Good Monday Sportsfans!
First off, using the spring forward clock adjustment as an excuse to be late for work is lame! I want to thank everyone for checking my podcast on Sunday. I continue to get great numbers, as far listeners, which makes it all the effort I put into the show — and it’s alot more than most people would probably realize — worth it.
I am entertaining the thought of adding a second show, possibly Wednesday or Thursday. Again, I appreciate all the excitement people has shown me as I talked about that prospect over the weekend.
Today’s post will be about taking a look at some of the players out there that people are downright angry with heading into the 2009 season. Let’s face it, most of us fantasiers try to be centered and balanced when evaluating players for the upcoming season, but we are human and there some big leaguers who we just flat out don’t like.
And that’s fine.
But, a bi-product of that negative sentiment is that some players get a bad wrap based on what they did to make fantasy owners dislike them and that can create an opportunity for these players to be under-valued. Last year, Carlos Delgado of the Mets was a perfect example of this phenomenom.
So, man of the ‘chive, who are some of these players? I’m glad you asked.
Carl Crawford OF Rays – He was the only fantasy worthy player for years and so last year he had some injuries and didn’t live up to his drafted level. Yeah, let’s give up on this has-been, afterall he is 27 now and so I’m sure he’s used up all his talent. /sarcasm off
Eric Bedard SP Mariners – Big trade to great pitchers park and he has the nerve to get injured and not live up to the hype!? But all the so-called experts said he was worth a high round pick last year, and since he dissapointed , he must be forever banished from consideration. Yeah, I’m sure the 227 SO in ’07 was a fluke. We’re double-dipping with sarcasm aren’t we?
Jake Peavy SP Padres – At 27, and coming off of two 200+ IP seasons in which he struck out 215 and 240 batters, some experts considered Peavy good enough to draft him over Johan Santana — who everyone knows has dibs on the top SP taken in every draft. The Jake-ster then proceeded to go 10-11, pitch fewer than 200 innings and only made 166 batters whiff. Yuck! Now he’s 28 entering the ’09 season and he is falling into the 5th, 6th and even lower rounds. The “Pads” probably won’t be much better as a team, but Peavy could have a nice rebound year and could even be dealt to a contender before the deadline which might help rekindle his effort.
Colby Rasmus OF Cardinals – Alot of youngsters made their mark in the bigs last year. Many of them had much less hype than the Redbirds 5-tooler. A sprained knee took a chunk out of his season and he never had that bust-out stretch like Evan Longoria or Jay Bruce. So, many fantasy propsectors have discarded Rasmus as last year’s news and moved on to this year’s crop of gems. Not so fast my friend, as this is the year to hype the 22-year-old Rasmus since he is being given every opportunity to win a starting gig with the Cards.
Andy LaRoche 3B Pirates – Bright lights and the big city. The LA Dodgers touted this youngin’ as the next big thing to hit the infield. It was just a matter of time and the hot corner would be filled for years to come. Well, it didn’t happen and a mid-season trade to the Bucos only flat-lined an already cardiac batting average. Even big brother Adam couldn’t help. But the Pirates haven’t given up on this 25-year-old just yet and neither should you. Would it really be all that surprising if this kid rebounded in ’09 and hit 20+ HR? Keep him on the radar.
Phil Hughes SP Yankees – Yes, this is same untouchable prospect that has continued to get pounded pretty-much every time he has taken the ball in the majors. Everyone is sick of hearing about him and his potential while he has put up horrible ERA numbers the last two years, 6.62 and 4.46. Maybe we can cut the 23-year-old a little slack since it might be a little tough living up to all the NY hype, especially when the Yanks kept you instead of going after Johan Santana. This might be a kid who gets a start, puts it all together and has 6-10 solid years of production.
Robinson Cano 2B Yankees – An AL batting title has already been engraved with this 26-year-olds name on it, according to fantasy and real baseball fans all over the country. Least that’s what everyone said heading into ’08. Then a .271 season happens and everyone wonders what’s wrong? I remember when 14 HR and 72 RBIs out of a 2B was pretty awesome, and that was a down year for Cano! True, he doesn’t bring much speed, but he can still put up some meaty numbers from a typically thin fantasy position.
That’s all for now, but I’ll be highlighting more of these type of players as we get closer to the start of the season and I start noticing solid fantasy players being dissed by the masses.
Have a great week and adjust all your clocks already, including your car radio!
