Jailhouse Rock

Hello you group of handsome readers,

I am posting the list of recent transactions in the JAIL league.  Notice the trade that took place last night, a 3-3, involving me (Usual Suspects) and the Prison Pinstripes, owned by Alex Geshwind.

I’m working on a good post for tommorrow, so don’t be too disappointed.

Good News, Bad News 04/16/08

Here it is; your weekly fix of Good News, Bad News.  Yesterday was a crazy day for my fantasy teams and I’m sure many of you have taken a few hits with injuries as well.

Everyone has low points in the season when it seems like every baseball headline is a “body blow” directed squarely at their team.  There are many different tactics to choose from, but regardless of which you choice, keep your sense of humor and remember it happens to everybody.  Injuries, slumps and (bad) luck are all part of baseball and, of course, fantasy baseball.

Good News – I picked up Indians pitcher Rafael Betancourt on Monday just in case troubled Closer Joe Borowski faltered.
> Bad News – The Fantasy Gods like to play giveth and taketh away.  While it’s true, Borowski did indeed explode on the mound Monday and end up on the DL, it was the only positive news I’d get on Tuesday.

Alfonso Soriano.jpg>Good News
– I no longer have to be concerned with where Alfonso Soriano is put in the Cubs batting order.
Bad News - Soriano injured his calf — though I have a feeling the achillies tendon may be involved — Tuesday night and will not be batting at all, anywhere, any time soon.

>Good News – Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun should be rested when he returns to the line up.
Bad News- He was benched Tuesday because he is hitting .226 and has these beautiful stats 11K/0BB/3HR/9RBI/0SB.

>Good News – Brewers 1B Prince Fielder was concerned with his health and changed his diet in the off-season and became a vegetarian.
Bad NewsSOMEBODY buy this dude a steak!!!!  He has lost his power – ZERO homers so far in 2008.

Jose Valverde wig.jpg>Good News
- With B.J. Ryan back from injury and hopefully Betancourt taking over as Closer for the Indians, I may end up with 4 Closers in the JAIL league.
Bad News - One of the other two Closers on my team is Jose “I ATE THE WORM” Valverde of the Astros.(Jose pictured above wearing a blonde wig)

>Good News – The San Francisco Giants organization and fans were thrilled when they opened their new stadium, AT&T Park, a few years ago and got out of Candlestick Park which was famous for its trash tornadoes.
Bad News - You’d think a fancy-smancy new stadium designed for baseball wouldn’t have a stairwell that is like 10-feet deep located right where third basemen go to reach for typical pop-ups.  Snakes 3B, Mark Reynolds, almost broke his neck for cripes-sake — luckily he broke the fall with his face on the rail.

>Good News - I was offered a trade for Jose “I Wish I Was A Bullfighter“ Valverde and I am definitely entertaining offers for him.
Bad News - I was offered 2 players, Ken Griffey, Jr. and Daniel Cabrera.  One problem, the team doesn’t have Cabrera on his team anymore – he waived him for a free-agent pick up.

>Good News -  I picked up Dodger pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo for a pitch-and-ditch start for Tuesday and the Dodgers rolled to an 11-2 win.
Bad News – Kuo, on a very tight pitch count, lasted only 4 Innings after 3 Walks in the first Inning and didn’t qualify for the Win.  Grrrr.

army men.jpg>Good News
– I still got it!  I can still remember how to build a pretty decent army-man fort in the dirt.
Bad News – I have to learn to build my army-man forts faster because after kneeling in the dirt for an hour, the strain on my back and knees left me screaming “MEDIC, MEDIC.” My boys thought I was still pretending and ran over with their toy helicopter.

>Good News – The Yankees and Red Sox are playing another series and we all get to have the media hype shoved down our throats again.

Invasion of the bodysnatchers.jpgBad News
– Reported as a Red Sox tid-bit, the true story of that jersey is that the real David Ortiz was wearing it when it was placed in the concrete.  He fell asleep, just like in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and now some alien is prancing around as “Big Papi.” (Remember that dog with the old-man’s face/head on it? Creepy.)

Okay, that is all for now.  Don’t forget to tune into The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show tonight at it’s new time,  Midnight Eastern.

Weekend 12 Pack Review, Plus Baby Naming

Good Tuesday to all you fine folks out there in MLB blogland.  I thought we’d take a little time and review how I did on the12 pitchers I recommended to you all on Friday, both here and on the podcast.

12 Pack.jpgWeekend 12 Pack

These were 4 pitchers for each day of the weekend — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — that were probably on your free agent list or owned starters who were definitely worthy of using, that you may have had some concerns about.

Friday

Vicente Padilla Texas Rangers – 6IP/7H/4ER/3BB/5K

Kyle Lohse St. Louis Cardinals – 5.1IP/8H/2ER/1BB/2K WIN

Livan Hernandez Minnesota Twins – 7IP/7H/0ER/1BB/3K WIN

Jeremy Guthrie Baltimore Orioles – 6.1IP/8H/2ER/1BB/4K

Saturday

Brandon Backe Houston Astros – 5IP/5H/0ER/5BB/2K WIN

Todd Wellemeyer St. Louis Cardinals – 6IP/5H/5ER/3BB/7K

Derek Lowe Los Angeles – 8IP/4H/1ER/0BB/6K WIN

Nick Blackburn Minnesota Twins – DNP

Sunday

Wandy Rodriguez Houston Astros – 7IP/5H/1ER/1BB/7K WIN

Joe Saunders Anahiem Angels – 5.1IP/6H/2ER/3BB/1K WIN

Greg Maddux San Diego Padres – 5IP/2H/0ER/1BB/2K WIN

A.J. Burnett Toronto Blue Jays – 5.2IP/7H/4ER/2BB/3K

Totals – 7 WINS/21ER/66.2IP/42K/20BB/64H

Not too shabby, so hopefully you cashed in a few of those picks.  I’ll try and post my Weekend 12 Pack every Friday right here on this very blog.  You’re excited about that, aren’t you?  Good, good.

Okay, time to pass on some random weirdness and general baseball tidbits.

Juan Samuel.jpg- Do you remember Juan Samuel — he played 2B for the Dodgers and the Phillies back in the 90′s?  Well, he must not read the same parenting and naming books we all do because he gave one of his sons the first name, ”Samuel”.

- The Texas Rangers had a starting pitcher throw more then 110 pitches only 4 times the entire 2007 season.  Already in 2008, they have had 4 starters go 110+ pitches.

- “Why buy good luggage?  You only use it when you travel.” — Yogi Berra

- Who was the first player to homer in Canada in both leagues? Richie Zisk of the Pittsburgh Pirates homered in both Montreal and Toronto.  (courtesy of The Baseball Almanac)

- Jose Valverde of the Houston Astros led the majors in Saves last year for the Arizona Diamondbacks, with 47.  He had 10 Saves in April in ’07.  He has 1 so far this year.

Randy Johnson.jpg- Randy Johnson of the Arizona D-Backs went 5 Innings in his first start of 2008 — a no decision – last night versus the San Fransico Giants and gave up 0 Earned Runs with 7 K’s.  In 2007, the “Big Unit” started his season off against the San Diego Padres and also went 5 Innings and had 7 K’s.  Though last year he gave up 6 Earned Runs and hit 2 batters en route to the loss.

Okay, that’s a wrap.

April 14th: A Day of Baseball Legends

It was on this day back in 1941 that a bouncing baby boy entered the world.  His destiny was the baseball diamond and his ability to hit a little round white ball would one day bring him much fame and fortune.

Pete Rose.jpgBut it’s his life away from the ballpark that most people associate Pete Rose with now.  How long will the shame of gambling and lying keep this legendary player out of the Hall of Fame? It’s a question that noboby seems able to answer or perhaps we know the answer, we just don’t want to admit it.

Forever.

As Rose celebrates his 67th birthday, I can’t help but wonder just how many birthdays are left for this scrappy brown-haired ballplayer?  I mean, not to be morbid, but he has lived life like he played baseball — always hustling — and at some point he’ll surely get tired, right?

Pete Rose hitting.jpgIt makes me sad to think that this baseball hero will probably pass on to whatever lies ahead still carrying the burden of  his imperfectons, instead of being honored for the on-the-field legendary status that he so rightfully earned.

Happy Birthday, Pete.  Thank you for doing your best.

Coincidentally, this is also the birthday of one of the most soft-spoken baseball icons of our generation.  Greg Maddux, sure-fire first ballot Hall-of-Famer, turns 42 today.

Greg Maddux tipping cap.jpgMaddux has never had any problems off the field, unless you consider a desperate passion for winning anything he participates in; whether it be cards, golf or flicking sunflower seeds.

Happy Birthday, Greg.  Thank you for being the best.

Greg Maddux.jpgBoth men have helped shape the game of baseball and will forever be remembered.  This is their day.

Weekend 12 Pack

This is taken from my podcast.  It is a segment I will try and do every Friday to help people in daily transaction leagues plan for their weekend.  These are12 pitchers – 4 each day, starting on Friday – who will hopefully be available on your free agent list or known pitchers who might be in questionable matchups.  Here is the first four scheduled to go Friday night.  Check out the podcast for the complete list of 12.

FRIDAY

Rangers Vincente Padilla – Gets a start versus a ’Jays team that had a late night flight to Texas after an extra-innings game against the A’s.  He’s 3-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 4 career starts against Toronto and is12-8 lifetime pitching at Rangers Ballpark.

Cardinals Kyle Lohse - Goes against a Giants team which is not going to score a lot of runs in ’08.  Plus, the Redbirds are playing pretty-well right now so a “W” is likely.

Twins Livan Hernandez - Pitches against a Royals team that is coming off a draining series versus the Yankees.  Livan is 2-0 and is pitching well, so lets push it a little.

Orioles Jeremy Guthrie – I like this guy and I am hoping he can be a quiet source of strikeouts this year. James Shields is on the hill for the Rays, so hopefully we can get a good ol’ fashioned pitchers duel.

Keeping it a little brief today because Casey Stern called me “extremely obnoxious”. =(

So, signing off the Johnny Archive blog, brought to you by Paxil.

McBlog Blog

Hi,

How are you today?  Good, Good.  Thank you for coming on by, sit down and let’s watch some cartoons.  Don’t worry we’ll ****-chat(c hit is blocked out lol) about baseball while we watch.

McBoing Boing.jpgFirst up, have you ever seen McBoing Boing?  Oh, you don’t know what you’re missing.  It’s great stuff, he talks with loud sound effects.  Very entertaining.

Speaking of Boing, that may have been the sound you heard when Jason Bay launched a bomb off of newly crowned Cubbies Closer, Kerry Wood.  First blown save of the year for the Texas right hander.  Would you like some Marmol on your toast?

Remember where you heard it, Carlos Marmol ends up with more Saves in Chi-town at the end of the year.

Ben 10.jpgOkay, next up on the cartoon bonanza, the li’l Archivers favorite, Ben 10.  This kid is tough.  He travels around with his grandpa and his cousin – who he kind of fights a lot with – in a old Winnebego.  He found some alien watch thing that allows him to turn into 10 different aliens that he uses to fight bad guys.

Kinda reminds me of the Royals, Orioles and the Marlins who are all in first place in their divisions.  Apparently, they have morphed themselves into teams that can play solid baseball without a lot of big name stars.  Unfortunately, Ben 10 can only stay in his alien form for a short period of time, before he turns back into a little kid…is the clock ticking for these teams, too?

Wonder Pets.jpgOkay, it’s time for Lenny, Tuck and Ming-Ming too!  The Wonder Pets are here!  These little guys disguise themselves as your average everyday schoolhouse pets until all the kids and teachers go home.  Then, they respond to the call of distressed animals.  They’re preferred mode of transportation is some boat-looking thing powered by a magic marker.

These three amigos kinda remind me of the three young arms in Cincinnati: Johnny Cueto, Edinson Volquez and Homer Bailey.  I know Bailey is in the minors, but he’s still part of the team, man.  If these wonder boys keep pitching they way are, the Reds are going to be in very good shape and their fans will be rescued from the long run of non-playoff seasons.

Okay, it’s nap time.  Bye-Bye.

We’ll have to do this again real soon.
