Bruce Lee Fantasy Baseball
Johnny Archive Presents Bruce Lee Fantasy Baseball
That’s right, Bruce Lee, the martial arts legend. His principles are key components to my very aggressive, full-court-press style of fantasy sports that I commonly refer to on my blog and podcast. A philosphy that is based on being dedicated, active, and unafraid of taking risks. Only serious fantasy owners who are willing and able to spend a fair amount of time on their teams can successfully implement this technique.
One of my favorite Lee quotes fits perfectly with how I approach fantasy sports, especially baseball. Read the quote and see if you get how it can apply to fantasy:
“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless – like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
You can just imagine Lee with that grin as he adds the “my friend” part. Nothing like a man being so badass that he fears nobody and just exudes calm and confidence. Anyway, as a fantasy fundamental basis, being like water can be applied to so many aspects of fantasy it’s amazing.
Most fantasy owners probably instantly think of the draft and how important it is to have a draft strategy going in, but still be flexible enough to adjust as unexpected players present themselves in later rounds. And that’s true. But that’s just one example, albeit, an important one.
If you enter your draft with a strong bias toward hitters and in round 3, and then 4, Tim Lincecum is still available you would be wise to adjust your plan — and flow like water — into the pool of pitchers for an absolute steal. That doesn’t mean totally abandoning your focus of getting key position players as a priority. But as the stream adjusts to a rock in it’s path by temporarily diverting itself to go around the obstruction, you should merely divert yourself into the path of least resistance to acquire a quality fantasy roster.
Here are more Lee quotes and examples on how they apply to fantasy:
“A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a fool can learn from a wise answer.”
Do the research on your league rules. This applies to ALL the leagues you participate in; most of us are in several leagues with varying rules on scoring, rosters etc. If your league rules don’t cover something or you don’t understand a rule, ask the commish (privately, if you must) for clarification. Some leagues try to get so in-depth with their verbage they actually can make their rules more complicated than they need to be.
You can even ask questions during your draft, including the current/recently updated status of players. Yes, you’ll probably have to endure a few wise-crackers with “funny” retorts, but eventually the class guys or the wannabe Peter Gammons of your league will come clean on the real answer.
Nothing worse than drafting Mark Reynolds, Alfonso Soriano, Jack Cust and Frank Thomas (recently retired) only to find out THIS league also deducts points for strikeouts.
“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”
This one is a little tricky. I do think it’s a good idea to gather information from several sources. But don’t draft the player at the top of the list of the predraft rankings, provided by the site of your draft software, during the draft and skip over the player you prefer simply because you are afraid of taking a player 18 spots down the list.
The essence of fantasy baseball is the thrill of actually having the control over a team assembled by YOUR preferences. So, don’t be a sheep and be herded into drafting a team based on rankings made by someone you don’t even know. The same thought applies to trading and acquiring free agents. If you wait until everyone thinks it’s a good idea to grab a player off of the waiver wire, odds are that player will be gone already when you go to claim him.
For example, early last year St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter was a free agent in most 14-team+ leagues as he was returning from injury. Those who took a flier on him (like me) early were rewarded. Those who waited until he proved he was indeed healthy again probably missed out.
“Notice that the stiffest tree is the most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.”
This one directly applies to the draft and reaffirms my earlier statements about draft preparation and execution. Assemble groups or tiers of players by what round you would prefer to draft them in. For example, make lists titled Early, Middle, and Late and place key players that you are targeting on each list to make it easy to reference them during the frantic atmosphere that is the draft.
“A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.”
Pictured above is Lee taking on (and yes, defeating) Chuck Norris.
This applies when settings goals for your year-end numbers. More specifically, as the season progresses and you begin to see the direction your stats are heading, don’t prematurely abandon a category because you are not going to achieve your preseason goal. This happens a lot when it comes to Saves and Steals early in the season and Wins later in the year.
In leagues where there is no trading, like the NFBC, it can seem hopeless if you get off to a slow start or are hit with injuries. But remember, having a few wining bids on key free agents via FAAB bidding can remedy a poor start. Don’t punt any category too soon — punting is for football, after all.
Make sure you join me live at 6PM ET on Sunday February 21 for the latest 1-hour edition of The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show on the Fantasy Sports Channel.

Today’s show will get us back in the swing of baseball. hehe Get it? Anyway, we’ll also talk about my current MIPs. Don’t know what a MIP is? Well, tune in and find out. Oh alright, MIP = Most Intriguing Player. Here’s just some of players who I currently consider MIPs.
- Joe Mauer
- Miguel Cabrera
- Matt Holliday
- David price
- Chris Perez
- Derek Jeter
- Alex Rodriguez
- Scott Kazmir
- David Wright
- Roy Halladay
We’ll discuss this list and if these players are trending up or down heading into 2010.
WOW, year 3 of the show! How cool is that?!
I am very excited to announce that I will be in Surprise, AZ at the end of February (26th – 1st of March) as the teams get spring training cranked up. If you are going to be there at that time, shoot me an email and perhaps we can hook up and talk fantasy baseball.
Okay, that’s it for now. See you at the show, well not “see” but you know what I mean.

Falling Off The Wagon
Well, I couldn’t control myself. I have been resisting the temptation of diving head first into mock draft madness. You know, when you start entering 10 mock drafts a day thinking it’ll make your real fantasy team stronger. By the way, “real fantasy team” is an interesting little concept, isn’t it?
Anyway, I had to do something to satisfy the itch. I mean, I wasn’t even aware what I was doing until I noticed I was staring at a login screen for a new CBSSports.com fantasy league. Yep, the “stinkin’ thinkin’” was already creeping in because I was telling myself I would only do a few “serious” rounds to test the waters of player sentiment heading into 2010.
But what the heck was I doing?! It was the day before the Super Bowl, for crikee’s sake. Where was my willpower when I needed it? I decided it was a crisis and needed to call my sponsor. The only problem is, I have no sponsor. Nope. Apparently, the A.M.A. still doesn’t recognize the Fantasy Flu or “H1ROUND1″ as a legitimate ailment. And thus, there is no official 12-step program to turn to when one finds him or herself — oh yes, this disease does indeed cross gender and racial lines, thank you — afflicted.
So, what can I say, it happened. I gave in. I’m weak. And I’m not ashamed to say I enjoyed it and I’ll do it again! Yes, I drafted a fantasy baseball team and I’ve been thinking about baseball ever since. Call it a binge if you’d like, but if God didn’t want baseball fans to play fantasy baseball he wouldn’t have created stats! Anyway, I need to research the new theory, and while I do, check out the complete draft results.
It was (only) a 10-team league 5X5-style with weekly transactions. My team is the Bipolar Bears and I decided to go with an extreme hitter-based team by not taking an arm until way late, Round #16.

J.A.I.L. Sentence?
Hey there!
If you think you are a seasoned fantasy owner and would like a challenge, this might be your lucky day. We have 1 opening in the Johnny Archive Invitational League (J.A.I.L.) for the upcoming 2010 baseball season.
Now, this not some free ESPN league that you can casually play and expect to have success. Not hardly. This is a 14-team daily-transaction mixed AL/NL 5X5 league with some of the most talented fantasy owners on the planet. There is a $100 entry fee (BAIL, as we call it), but all the money is paid back in prize money. It is a very aggressive league that has only 3 bench spots so you have to be active and not be afraid to make tough decisions.
To be honest, most rookies are overwhelmed and can’t handle it. So, if you inquire about the spot make sure you have the “stones” to be able to hang with the big boys for the entire baseball season…because the other 13 owners will and they’ll gladly chew up another wanna-be J.A.I.L. member. Matter of fact, I doubt any rookie is capable of winning the J.A.I.L. in their first year, that if one does, I’ll pay them an extra $500 on top of the normal league prizes!
Again, there is only 1 spot open and I doubt it will be open long. It looks like we’ll be drafting Sunday March 14, but it’s not 100% confirmed yet.

Matt Berry & Marc Ronick Discuss Fantasy Industry
It’s Sunday! I hope you are having a good time whereever you may be around the world! Make sure you take some time out of your day to check out The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show, which is on The Fantasy Sports Channel at BlogTalkRadio.com, later today at 5pm ET.
On the show we will discuss News & Notes around the sport of baseball like we do each and every week. We’ll also talk two-start pitchers for the week ahead. Joining us as usual will be our good friend Matt “Hack” Hackenmiller who will be sharing with us his first ever official fantasy baseball ”rant”! That should be fun.
As a special treat, I’ll play an interview our very own Marc Ronick did with Matt “TheTalentedMrRoto” Berry of ESPN. They’ll talk about the fantasy industry, as a whole, and what is good and bad about some of the people involved with it at this time. Of course, I have personally been on a crusade to try and expand the fantasy genre ever since I started writing this blog, 5 years ago. I have tried as best I can to help dispel the perception that fantasy sports are only for statistical geeks and nerds.
Frankly, I have never been overly fond of the term “fantasy” to describe our hobby. For the longest time I would cringe everytime I heard someone refer to our passion with such a silly, shallow word. For baseball it was much easier to avoid the word fantasy, as most of the real enthusiasts participated in rotisserie baseball which had its roots in statistical analysis.
But for the game played on the gridiron, the two words — fantasy and football – went together much too well. Heck, even I have to admit “fantasy football” rolls off the tongue very smoothly and is easy to remember. So, it stuck. Now, all sports — golf and NASCAR included – are considered part of the fantasy industry…even baseball, though you still hear ”roto” from time totime.
I’ll go more into this at a later time, but I think you see where I’m at on this fantasy business. Heck, you can get yourself into big trouble these days if you try googling “fantasy,” eeps! Thank goodness for parental locks for the computer.
Okay, see you on the podcast…well, I guess you’ll see me, erm…hear me. You know what I mean.

OPENING DAY 2009!
We’ve made it! Sure, last night’s game in Phily was cool, but today is the real Opening Day! I’m going to just ramble a bit today. I’m excited, thrilled, drained, nervous and relieved all at the same time.
- Yesterday’s podcast was excellent! It was my highest rated show ever and also set a record for live listeners for me. Sure, it was a bummer that Geoff Stein couldn’t make it, but he apologized big-time and explained that he was exhausted and we’ll reschedule him.
- I’m a little concerned about doing 7 fantasy leagues, but I’ll just have to work hard on staying organized — which will indeed be a chore for me.
-
As I stated in my post the other day, I prefer the new Mets stadium over the Yankees new home. Both places are nice and both teams should contend in ’09. - Derek Lowe pitched great as the Bravos beat the Phils Sunday Night. Brett Myers was a bit shaky early, but his breaking stuff improved as the game went on.
- Jeff Francoeur went deep utilizing a new batting stance. I’m a bit worried that launching that HR might actually hurt him, as he might try to hit homers in his next 20-30 ABs and pull everything.
- Rookie Jordan Shafer also went deep — in his first big league AB, no less — which is not something you should expect to continue to happen. The main part of this dude’s game is speed. Simply aiming for the fences will probably cost him his starting job.
- I kinda wish the NCAA would move the hoops finals to another day so MLB could bask in the limelight by itself on Opening Day. By the way, I will go with the Elephants to win it all.
- I’m in the finals of my fantasy basketball league. My opponent is my good friend Firewyrm, who has a loaded team. Had I not lost 2 of my top picks, Michael Redd and Amare Stoudamire to injuries, I think I would’ve won, but now I need alot to go right to take the title.
- We’ve already had one game snowed out today, grrrr, I can’t wait until we get to the age where every team north of Mexico has a retractable roof stadium. It just makes sense, c’mon.
-
After doing my first show on The Fantasy Sports Channel at BlogTalkRadio I’ve been encouraged to entertain the idea of extending the show to 120 minutes. Whoa, cool, I’ll take that as a compliment from the new network. - Ryan Howard struck out in a crucial AB last night in the 9th inning. Howard owners should remember he has been known as a bit of a slow starter, so don’t panic if it takes a few weeks to get it going — yes, I know he had a great spring.
- Keep an eye on the Rangers and Nationals pitching staffs, I just have a feeling there is going to be a few surprises emerge.
- I’m starting to jump on the A’s bandwagon, though the young pitching staff worries me. I wonder if Pedro Martinez lowered his price tag, how’d he look in green and white? Talk about a good mentor for young guys.
- Now that the season has started, fantasy owners need to switch gears and start preparing for free agent signings. This is the part of the game so many owners fail at because, yes, it does require a little effort. Last year guys like Cliff Lee, Carlos Quentin and Ryan Ludwick were all undrafted players who went on to have major impacts on fantasy leagues.
- If you are in a league that has free transactions, and most do, then don’t be tentative when it comes to snatching up a hot player, you can always release him later if he doesn’t pan out.
- Don’t be rude when you get what you consider an insulting trade offer. The other owner may not know just how much better Carl Crawford is compared to Luke Scott and Kevin Millwood. Plus, if you burn that bridge early you may miss out on a future trading partner. Yes, I know, it is frustrating to repeatedly get useless offers, but simply hit the “reject” button and move on.
- For those owners coming over to fantasy baseball from football be prepared. The season is much, much longer and you really need to pace yourself. Don’t get too happy if your team gets off to a good start or too down if your gang struggles out of the gate.
- Now that I think about it, you’ll hear alot of people encourage team owners who’s team gets off to a bad start. You don’t hear people reminding owners who’s team rockets out to a comfortable lead that they need to keep working. I had a double-digit lead with a week to go last year in the 2 leagues I won and I was still sweating it out.
- Okay, I don’t want to get too aggressive with advice today, after all it is Opening Day! It’s a day for us fantasiers to share our sport with the masses. Go out, or stay in, and enjoy it all!

Big Weekend: New Digs & Putting My ‘Boys’ Up
It’s Christmas Eve for baseball fans! Tomorrow is the first official game of the season. Lots of excitement to be sure. Of course fantasy fanatics are jazzed, but Opening Day is all about real baseball as fans from all over the world get to celebrate the start of MLB baseball.
This year, we’ve got a few other big stories adding to the hoopla. Sure, most people are probably nervous about me doing my NFBC draft Saturday April 4th at 5pm ET knowing that if I don’t win this league I will undergo an intense surgical procedure, the VASECTOMY! I have big plans for the Johnny Archive Snip-Snips as this team is affectionately known.
On top of that high drama situation, New York is debuting two new stadiums! We all got a peek at them as they played exibition games Friday Night. Here’s my take on them based on my limited exposure.
New Yankee Stadium – I am quite underwhelmed. Sorry, but they basically made the same stadium next to the old one. On T.V. it is almost impossible to tell a difference. I’m not sure what is supposed to be exciting about that? I’m sure it’s better for the fans that are actually in the ballpark, but since they jacked-up the ticket prices to help pay for the place, not as many “average” fans will be able to experience it. Plus, if you’re going to make a new stadium in this century, put a lid on it! Rain-outs are a bummer and since we have the advancements to put on a retractable roof and still keep the building look good, it should be a requirement for all new stadiums.
New Mets Stadium – Now this is a cool looking place! It’s crisp, clean and even through the T.V. it feels new. Maybe it’s because the old Shea Stadium was so ugly, but this place really jumps out at you. Mets fans deserve a true home field that makes baseball an enjoyable experience and not a quest to see if you can make it through alive. It’s still hard to tell if it will benefit hitters or pitchers more, but the reduced foul territory should help get the batters another whack or two. If I had to choose which of the new stadiums I like better, I bet you can guess already, but yeah, I think the new Mets home park is by far the better looking place.
Okay, with that, I’m back to doing some last minute evaluating of my potential draft picks for the NFBC draft. The draft will be held at MockDraftCentral.com at 4pm ET. Speaking of MockDraftCentral.com, Geoff Stein, will be my special guest on tomorrow’s edition of The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show — my first live show as a member of the Fantasy Baseball Channel at BlogTalkRadio.com.
Remember, tomorrow my show moves to its new time, 5pm ET on Sundays. If you get a chance, please swing by and check out the show live or catch the archive version at iTunes.com.
Take care and enjoy the start of the season!
