Good News, Bad News 03/04/09

It’s Wednesday, so it must be time for our special weekly feature.  I’ll be back later in the day with more player breakdowns featuring the letter “Z.”  So, let’s get to it!

Thumbnail image for rush limbaugh b and w.jpgGood News
- Rush Limbaugh is getting a ton of attention these days, which keeps Republicans in the news.
Bad News – Speaking of ‘ton”…

Good News – Earmarks are a major topic these days, it seems all politicians want to stomp them out.
Bad News – I’m glad my ears have no “marks” on them, but I don’t think we should make fun of – or single out – those who do.

Good News – Thanks to all the amazing cable channels, I’ve been watching a lot of classic films lately.
Bad News – Besides Bill Murray, what happened to all the other great actors who starred in “Meatballs?”

Good News – Medical advancements have made great strides in the last few years.
Bad News – Matter of fact, cyst removals are semi-routine these days with the aid of steroids – doh!

matt vasgersian 187x269.jpgGood News
– The new MLB Channel is off to a great start, catering to wholesome, pure baseball fans.
Bad News – New MLB Tonight host Matt Vasgersian must have missed the memo about not dropping “F-Bombs” on the air — even if he thinks he’s at commercial.

Good News – The WBC is about to kick off this week.
Bad News – Now the WBA, WBO, WNBA and HBO all want to hold their own special baseball tournaments!

Good News – The USA is known for its cutting edge technical inventions.
Bad News – It’s been a little slow for our scientists lately, well except for the Snuggie!

Good News – I’m still hanging in there with twitter, though I’m trying not to over do it.
Bad News – Not all twitterers feel the same way, as they feel the need to update me on every meal they eat.

Thumbnail image for Carls jr star.jpgGood News
– Since so many people are starting to use twitter, you don’t need to feel like a dork stating you “tweet.”
Bad News – That’s not exactly 100% true.  I’m still uncomfortable saying,”google, gig, blog or tweet.”

Good News – I just discovered there are three Carl’s Jr burger joints in Austin, now!
Bad News – I’m not sure it’s “normal” to get this exciting over a new fast food restaurant moving into the area.

Good Day – R.I.P. Paul Harvey

Good News, Bad News 08/13/08

Hello Gang,

It’s Wednesday and we all know what that means.  So, on to the show…

Adam Dunn.jpgGood News
– The Snakes have struggled offensively and are officially Dunn, as in Adam Dunn.  They added the big popper just in time to inject some life into the under-performing team.
Bad News – Arizona already had a lineup filled with a ton of strikeouts and now they just added one of the most strikeout prone hitters in baseball.

Good News – I did my second fantasy football draft last night and I also did a podcast for the entire draft, so I was on the air for a little over 2 and 1/2 hours straight.
Bad News – My face is sore from yacking so long.

Good News – Oh ya, back to Dunn for a second, the first series he gets with his new team…in Colorado!
Bad News – Dunn went 1-3 (double) with 2 BB / 2 K and left 3 men on base.

Good NewsRandy Johnson got his 10th win of the season and 294th of his career last in Colorado.
Bad News – The D-Backs bullpen blew a few Wins for the “Big Unit” early in the season that would’ve made him getting to 300 more of a certainty this year.

olympic emblem.jpgGood News
– The USA athletes seem to be doing decent over in China.
Bad News – I am not very…umm…well…ya’ know…INTERESTED there I said it!  I still love my country, though.

Good NewsMatt Holliday is batting .348 with 22 HR, 69 RBI and 17 SB in 400 ABs.
Bad News – The Colordao Rockies aren’t having a very good year so far as they defend the NL championship.

Good News – The San Francisco Giants have won 50 games already this year, more then most experts thought they’d win all year.
Bad News – The entire G-Men organization is holding it’s breath after stud starter Tim Lincecum had to leave Tuesday’s game after taking a liner off of his knee.

Good News – The Houston Astros have won 10 of their last 12 games and the fans continue to come out to support the team for home games.
Bad News – Even with Lance “The Big Puma” Berkman hitting a grand salami last night and Hunter Pence getting hot, this team has no shot at the playoffs in 2008.

Good NewsIchiro got 2 more hits Tuesday Night as he extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
Bad News – He is still very underrated by fantasy owners when it comes to playes traded for to make a difference in a championship run.

Mark Spitz.jpgGood News
Mark Spitz is the man who has been associated with olympic swimming for decades after winning numorous gold medals back in the 1970′s.
Bad News – With all the hype around Michael Phelps going for even more gold medals in this year’s Olympics, you’d have thought someone would have had the smarts to invite Spitz to be present during this celebration of the US swimming program at the current Olympics.

Okay, that’s about it for now.

Good News, Bad News 5/21/08

It’s that special day!  It’s mid-week and you need some insight on today’s headlines.  So, sit back and allow Johnny Archive to mildy amuse you with the latest edition of Good New, Bad News.

Good News – The San Francisco Giants have won 18 games and the organization is thrilled.
Bad News – The Colorado Rockies have won 18 games and the city is in a panic.

Good News – So far the professional Women’s Team Handball League (I’m assuming there is such a thing) appears to be free of any controversary.
gary bettman.jpgBad News – Unfortunately, the NFL has Spygate, the NBA has officials betting on and probably fixing games, MLB has ‘Roids and the NHL has Gary Bettman.

Good NewsBarack Obama won the Oregon primary last night and appears to have sealed up the Democratic nomination.
Bad NewsHilary Clinton stomped Obama in the Kentucky primary and vows to “fight on.”

Good News – The Detroit Tigers and Justin Verlander had a great night on Tuesday, getting a Win over the Seattle Mariners.
Bad News – After racing out to an 11-1 lead after 6 innings, the Tiger’s bullpen gave up 7 Runs (including 4 in the 9th) over the final 3 innings and barely hung on for a 12-8 victory.

Good NewsDoug Mathis got his first MLB start last night for the Texas Rangers.
Bad News – Mathis was left out on the mound a lot longer than normal (gave up 9 Runs) after the Rangers played extra innings the night before, using up their bullpen.

alcohol sign.jpgGood News – Consuming massive amounts of alchohol is not encuraged by MLB teams.
Bad News – Apparently that doesn’t prevent MLB teams from suffering hangovers, as the Mets, Padres, Rockies and Yankees are all still recovering from the abrupt endings to their 2007 season.

Good News – The New York Yankess got 3B Alex Rodriguez back from injury on Tuesday and he returned to form, hitting a 2-run homer.
Bad NewsMike Mussina also returned to form, getting shelled by the Baltimore Orioles.

Good News – Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andruw Jones may be able to avoid surgery on his injured right knee and stay in the lineup.
Bad News – Jones, and his .167 AVG, may be staying in the lineup.

Good News – I’m thirsty.  I’m sure glad this soda is ice cold.
Bad News – Did I just write that out loud?

charles manson.jpgGood News – Professionally trained sniffing dogs showed signs they were agitated (which means maybe they were on to something) out in the California desert at Charles Manson’s old ranch, where they were looking for remains.
Bad News – Maybe the dogs were just agitated because they were taken to the hot desert in the middle of the summer!

Good News – The Red Sox continue to sell out their home games in one of the most historic venues in MLB: Fenway Park.
Bad News – The capacity at the renowned Fenway Park is the 3rd smallest in the majors, at 36,336 — even Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Florida have bigger stadiums.

ted kennedy.jpgGood News – Senator Ted Kennedy was released from the hospital today after recently being diagnosed with Cancer.
Bad News – The United States is probably more synonymous world-wide with the Bush family name these days, rather than the Kennedys of last century.

Whether you like or dislike Ted Kennedy, he is a link to our history and I want to send out my thoughts to the Kennedy family.

Good News, Bad News 04/09/08

Okie-dokie, here is the latest installment in the now world famous Good News, Bad News.  I need to start using a new program so I can add my green and red colors, since the new and improved mlblogs doesn’t have colored text anymore. =(

Good News – Finally, today’s Good News, Bad News segment is posted!
Bad News – Since I spent so much time on my heart-felt post about Justin Speier, this post was a little/lot late.

Good News – The Archive family got a new couch and loveseat delivered today.
Bad News – The Archive boys are specialists at breaking in new furniture…poor, poor furniture.

Good News – My free agent pick up of Dodgers outfielder Andre Either is working out pretty well.
Bad News – Instead of Either’s playing time costing Juan Pierre, who I don’t own on any teams, Matt Kemp has been riding the pine and I own him in several leagues.

Good News – Mike Siano and crew have been trying to improve the newly revamped Fantasy 411 Show that has received mixed revues from some of its most devoted fans.
Bad News – Ummm, I watched today’s show already and sadly it was probably the worst 411 I have ever watched.

Good News – If you missed the live showing of the MLB.com Fantasy 411, it apparently is going to rebroadcast every day 2-3 times immediately after the live show.
Bad News – Instead of all the rebroadcasts, why not make the live show a 2-hour show?  That way there would be plenty of time for all the extra gimmicks that chew up most of the current 50-minute show.

Good News – This blog enables me to express my opinions on various topics and most of the time nobody pays it too much attention.
Bad News – If I keep trying to offer up my light-hearted, humorous tidbits about the 411, someone might get offended.

Good News – Johnny Cueto’s dog doesn’t have to go outside like most other dogs.
Bad News – Cueto doesn’t walk anybody, including his own dog. 18K/0BB in 2 starts.

Good News – I made my first trade of the year!  I swapped Giants Closer Brian Wilson for Brewers promising starter Yovani Gallardo who should be back fairly soon.
Bad News – I feel like I traded fun surfing music (Beach Boys) for mysterious new age (Yanni).

Good News – After all that drama with Speier last night, Scot Shields is pitching the eighth inning for the Angels today, which means Speier will hopefully get the next closing opportunity.
Bad News – K-Rod is only supposed to be out until this weekend.

Good News – The college basketball season is over, so there should be more focus back on baseball in the sports world.
Bad News – It’s almost political season again, which apparantly has no off-season.  Anyone seen Ross Perot lately?

Okay, that’s a wrap!

Good News, Bad News 04/02/08

Guess what day it is!?  That’s right, it’s your weekly dose of Good News, Bad News.  I hope these next few minutes will help to make your “hump” day just a little more managable.  If even the slightest grin is impressed upon your face, then I will have accomplished my task.

Whoa!  Not yet, no grinning until you read the humor part.  Jeez, you’re anxious to be made happy aren’t you?  Okay, here we go…

Good News - The MLB season season has officially started!
Bad News - It seems like we’ve had more false starts than a drunken swim meet.

Good News - I finally, after many minutes of sitting here, thought of something that could have a lot of “false starts.”  Whew.
Bad News – I’m guessing not many of you are big swimming fans and probably have no idea what goes on at a swim meet.

Pedro Martinez.jpgGood News
– NY Mets starter Pedro Martinez, who has been injury-plagued the last few years, was able to make his scheduled start on Tuesday.
Bad News – Pedro got shelled by the Fish, injured his hamstring in the 4th inning and is probably headed to the DL for an extended period time.

Good News – The Atlanta Braves, picked by many experts to win the NL East, have been involved in two very exciting and close games.
Bad News – The Braves are now 0-2 after falling to the Pirates and the Nationals to open the season, who are both not predicted to win many games in 2008.

Good News – Padres closer Trevor Hoffman nailed down his first Save of the season Tuesday night against the Astros.
Bad News – I’m guessing there’s still a lot of fans in San Diego that are still steamed about his meltdowns in crucial games in 2007, like the All-Star game and the Wild-Card play in game.

GotPapi.jpgGood News
– The reigning MLB Champs, the Boston Red Sox, have opened the season with 2 Wins in three games.
Bad News - The clean up hitter for the ’Sox, David “Big Papi” Ortiz, is still looking for his first hit of the new season.

Good News – The San Francisco Giants scored 2 Runs in Tuesday’s game and only lost by 1 Run to their long-time rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Bad News – The Giants, thought to be very lacking in the power department, have yet to hit anything other than a single thus far in ’08.

Good News – The LA Angels of Anahiem got a much needed quality start from off-season acquisition Jon Garland who went 8 IP, giving up only 1 ER to the Twins.
Bad News – Garland had 0 strikeouts, which means he is not likely to have another outing like that all year.

Eric Gagne.jpgGood News
– The Milwaukee Brewers are a serious contender this year in the NL Central and have a very exciting team full of good looking young guys.
Bad News – The Brew-Crew is counting on Eric Gagne, who apparently is homeless and without access to a razor or running water, to be their closer.

Good News – LA Dodgers base coach Larry Bowa, who is notorious for his hot temper, was ejected from the game for not adhereing to the umpires instruction to get into the coaching box.
Bad News – Another poor defenseless water cooler took the brunt of Bowa’s anger when he came off the field.  Why are so many baseball players mad at these water coolers!?  Where is PETWC (division of PETA) when we need them!?

Have a great week and don’t forget to tune into The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show tonight at 10:30 pm Central or an archived show on BTR and MLBFrontOffice.com.
