Today’s show will get us back in the swing of baseball. hehe Get it?  Anyway, we’ll also talk about my current MIPs.  Don’t know what a MIP is?  Well, tune in and find out.  Oh alright, MIP = Most Intriguing Player.  Here’s just some of players who I currently consider MIPs.

  • Joe Mauer
  • Miguel Cabrera
  • Matt Holliday
  • David price
  • Chris Perez
  • Derek Jeter
  • Alex Rodriguez
  • Scott Kazmir
  • David Wright
  • Roy Halladay

We’ll discuss this list and if these players are trending up or down heading into 2010.

WOW, year 3 of the show!  How cool is that?!

I am very excited to announce that I will be in Surprise, AZ at the end of February (26th – 1st of March) as the teams get spring training cranked up.  If you are going to be there at that time, shoot me an email and perhaps we can hook up and talk fantasy baseball.

Okay, that’s it for now.  See you at the show, well not “see” but you know what I mean.

J.A.I.L. Sentence?

Hey there!

If you think you are a seasoned fantasy owner and would like a challenge, this might be your lucky day.  We have 1 opening in the Johnny Archive Invitational League (J.A.I.L.) for the upcoming 2010 baseball season.

jailpic homepage.jpgNow, this not some free ESPN league that you can casually play and expect to have success.  Not hardly.  This is a 14-team daily-transaction mixed AL/NL 5X5 league with some of the most talented fantasy owners on the planet.  There is a $100 entry fee (BAIL, as we call it), but all the money is paid back in prize money.  It is a very aggressive league that has only 3 bench spots so you have to be active and not be afraid to make tough decisions.

To be honest, most rookies are overwhelmed and can’t handle it.  So, if you inquire about the spot make sure you have the “stones” to be able to hang with the big boys for the entire baseball season…because the other 13 owners will and they’ll gladly chew up another wanna-be J.A.I.L. member.  Matter of fact, I doubt any rookie is capable of winning the J.A.I.L. in their first year, that if one does, I’ll pay them an extra $500 on top of the normal league prizes!

Again, there is only 1 spot open and I doubt it will be open long.  It looks like we’ll be drafting Sunday March 14, but it’s not 100% confirmed yet.

If you’re interested, contact me here or email me johnnyarchive@johnnyarchive.com.

A Perfect Season

It was an absolutely thrilling championship in the 2009 JAILBowl as the Drop Kick Fluties barely defeated CDN Raider 4 Life, 110-107, and completed their PERFECT SEASON!

Entering Monday night, the ‘Fluties had what seemed like a comfortable double-digit lead, 100-83, with the Vikes’ Kicker and Defense yet to play. CDN only had one player left, but it was perhaps the best fantasy player and #1 overall pick, Adrian Peterson.

The 17-point cushion slowly eroded until it was down to a mere 3 points, thanks to the 2 TD game by A.P. But the realgame was running out of time and the Bears were lining up for the game-winning field goal. Once again, AJ’s team had life as the kick was no good — meaning overtime and an opportunity for Peterson to score more points.

With the ball for the first time in OT, Peterson caught a swing pass and rumbled for 10 yards which would have closed the gap even more, but he fumbled which negated the point gain. To make matters worse, the fumble was recovered by the Bears who then scored the game-winning touchdown which ended the game, the championship and the season.

Both Carlton and AJ deserve big props for managing their teams and making this one of the most intriguing fantasy seasons ever.

Here is the path the ‘Fluties took to accomplish their amazing feat of perfection:

Week Opponent Result
1 @Team Robert Won 98 – 88
2 @Don’t Tread On Me Won 121 – 101
3 (Pro Fantasy Games) Won 131 – 110
4 @The True Guru Won 113 – 90
5 CDN Raider 4 Life Won 127 – 93
6 Oracles of Omaha Won 147 – 75
7 @The Fantasy Sports Forum Won 117 – 99
8 Felon’s M*A*S*H* Unit Won 115 – 98
9 Death Row Doggies Won 97 – 90
10 Swiss Cheeseheads Won 99 – 97
11 Archive Army Won 115 – 88
12 @JunkyardJake Won 130 – 120
13 @JERSEY HITMEN Won 122 – 118
14 The True Guru Won 147 – 127
15 Team Robert Won 112 – 69
16 Cdn Raider 4 Life Won 110 – 107
(JAILBOWL 2009)

The Drop Kicks’ had the 8th overall pick in the draft and ifyou look at their picks, they went against the grain choosing names that many fantasiers were leery of on draft day. Just look at their top 5 picks; (1st)Andre Johnson, (2nd)Aaron Rodgers, (3rd)Chad Ochocinco, (4th)Thomas Jones, (5th)Ray Rice.

All solid players, but the making of a “perfect team”? And it’s not like they made a monster trade (no trades all year)or snagged the biggest free agents (most players that were added were later dropped) that turned their season around.

No, this was simply the case of a terrific fantasy owner(s) putting together a solid team, not over-managing, and gettinga few breaks over the course of the season.

I have stated repeatedly on my podcasts and on my blogs how talented I feel the members of the JAIL leagues are, and I think the 2009 JAIL FB season is a classic example of that.
The Browns are good people and great fantasy owners. Enjoy the rewards and the satisfaction the title of CHAMPION brings, as you deserve it!

Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR! May the new decade bring you joy and prosperity!

Zzzzz Best Sleeper Outfielder?

Hello Baseball Fans!

The posts this week will be brought to you by the letter “Z”.

Let’s review an exciting player who we were jazzed about from last year.  I’m working on my official M.I.P. (Most Intriquing Players) List and this kid may well end up being on the final list.  Matter of fact, it’s a lock.

carlos gomez bunting.jpgCarlos Gomez OF MIN
– This kid came out of the gate in 2008 like his jockstrap had ants in it.  His owners were feeling very pleased since they had to overlook spring training injury issues when they drafted him.  The defense was there, he was stealing bases, gobbling up infield hits and 60+ SBs seemed like a lock.  Well, as is the case with al ot of young players they had to adjust to the league adjusting to them and that’s where “Go-Go” Gomez hit a bit of a wall.  His final year stats aren’t all that inspiring (2008 MIN 577AB 79R 149H 7HR 59RBI 33SB .258), but let’s dive in a tad deeper shall we?

His AVG at home .278 and on the road .236, hrmmm, I guess he enjoyed that hard surface in the dome.  The other stats show no major difference between home and away.  What about breaking down his months from last year?

April – He only hit .253, but he had his best month of SB with 9 with only 1 CS.

May – He really took off: .299 3 HR/2TRI/3DBL/16RBI/17R, but SB dropped rate to 6SB/4CS.

June – Now with higher expectations, the spiral began: .236 1HR/1TR/1DBL 4SB/3CS.

July – Life in the valley: .220/0HR/0SB/1CS ewww, scary.  He was nursing a quad, though.

Aug – Not all is lost: .238/7SB/1CS/1HR, with his legs feeling better, the speed returns.

Sept – Nice end to the season: .289/5SB/1CS/1HR/3TRI/6DBL

Carlos Gomez.jpgAll in all, I am optimistic about the future for Gomez.  This is a 23-year-old lanky kid with a ton of talent and speed.  But don’t be fooled into thinking this is a one-trick pony.  He’s 6’3″ and still filling out.  I just hope he doesn’t take his speed for granted and be too focused on the 400+ homer.  I’m thinking of an Alex Rios-ish type player here, with both still considerable room to grow.

What will help you get this Twin outfielder a bit later in the draft than perhaps his value dictates is the reality that fantasy owners take it personal when exciting propects don’t immediately develop into Hall of Famers.  Especially when they break out for a short time and get fantasiers all wound up, like Gomez did in May last year.

When I look for sleepers, I look for talent and opportunity.  He has the talent, no doubt, and will definitely get a massive amount of ABs even if he does struggle at the plate because his defense is such a benefit to the ballclub.

*stamp of approval*

I likey Carlos Gomez!

Keeping Up With Keepers

Two posts in one day!?!  Holy multiple reading options Batman!

I know, I know.  But hey, I’m starting to get that little tingle in my tum-tum — and no it’s not gas!

spahgetti.jpgAnd yes, I’m going to start getting into some actual numbers.  Last year, I went back and forth, sometimes I put in too much math and other times not enough.  Writing a good fantasy baseball post is kinda like making a batch of spaghetti, too much sauce and it turns into a sloppy joe mix, not enough sauce and it’s like mac & cheese, less the cheese part.

So, let’s see if we can add the proper amount of numbers to justify my thinking without putting you to sleep.

I’m going to start by talking about MY keepers from the JAIL league.  We can keep up to 3 player from last year’s team, 1 from each tier/round of the 2008 draft.  The tiers are 1-7 / 8-14 / 15-26.  If you chose to keep a player who went undrafted, he counted towards your 15-26 tier as your 26th round pick.  That’s the other twist: you lose the round of the player in 2008.  For example, if you kept a 1st rounder from last year, you give up your 1st round pick in this year’s draft.

I know alot of leagues use various types of keeper systems, but at this point, I really like how we’re doing this.  It allows owners to keep enough players to build around, while not draining the draft pool so much that any new owners have almost no shot of getting anyone good.  It also challenges owners to make some tough decisions.

For example, A-Rod could have been kept in exchange for the 6th overall selection in this year’s draft, but the owner elected not to keep him.  Instead, he decided to keep B.J. Upton and give up his 3rd rounder.  This may look strange now, but if A-Rod folds under the pressure this year and BJ continues to improve and put up round 1 or 2 production, this could be a major boom for his team.  We shall see how it plays out.

Another interesting dilemma I thought was dealing with the top overall pick in the draft.  The team that had that spot elected to keep Albert Pujols and give up the #1 pick.  Couple things come to mind: He didn’t know exactly who was being kept by other owners, so he didn’t know was going to be available. And how risky is Pooh-Bear this year health wise?  Again, time will tell how this plays out.  I just like that the owners were faced with tough calls. I mean, hey, the JAIL is all about toughness.

ryan howard face.jpgOh yeah, some other yahoo had a decision to make in round uno.  What would you have done?  Remember that the JAIL is a 14-team mixed 5X5 league.  I had Ryan Howard on my team who would cost me my 1st rounder this year, and because I won the league in 2008 (Oh yeah, I’m still milkin’ it, baby!) that meant it would be the last 1st rounder, pick #14.

I obtained Howard last season with about 7 weeks or so to go in the season.  I gave up Ryan Braun for him, who was my 1st round pick in 2008.  At the time, Braun was dealing with a back issue that had kept him out of a few games and Howard was still trying to overcome an absolutely horrible start to the season.   I also knew that Howard has proven to be a pretty good 2nd half, more specifically Aug/Sept, player and I need a little punch in my power categories.

Ryan Braun batting.jpgThe trade worked out well for me as Howard stayed hot for most of August, basically carrying my team offensively.  Braun put up some good numbers as well, so the deal helped both teams overall.

So, I have some favorable feelings when it comes to Howard, probably much more so than others who drafted him and endured his full season numbers, which included 3 AVG-wrecking months (April .168/May .238/June .234) to start the season.  At #14, that’s about where alot of people think Howard will be drafted, though many people feel his low AVG should drop him into the 2nd round and just out of the elite player status.

I decided to keep him, focusing on the fact that his lowest HR total for a season, in the last 3 years, was 47 in 2007.  That year he had his lowest RBI total as well, 136, compared to ’06 and ’08 when he tallied 149 and 146.  It’s true, he has punished his owners in AVG and SO the last couple of seasons, though we don’t use Strikeouts as a category in the JAIL, so no biggie.  But this guy hit .313 in ’06 in 704 PA, so I’m looking for a bit of a rebound in ’09.  I’m not expecting or needing .300+, but more like .275ish.  Especially if that is bundled with a his normal bucket of HR/RBIs.

My advice is to play up his poor start during pre-draft bantering and then snag yourself a bargain the late 1st or 2nd round.

My tier #2 player was about as much a no-brainer as there is, I think.  Cubs catcher, Geo Soto, in place of a 12th rounder is pretty-close to eternal fantasy bliss.  I’ll even take a sophomore drop-off from his ’08 numbers (494AB/.285/23HR/86RBI) and still be very satisfied.  Catchers continue to be one of the biggest reasons fantasy owners typically go through more malox/advil/paxil in a season then most LA suburbs put together.  I won’t lie, I’m quite happy to enter the season with my catching taken care of, regardless of whom I get to pair with Geo.

If you remember, I actually made catching a priority last year when I snagged Joe Mauer and Russell Martin in my 411 league.  I’m going to talk more in the upcoming weeks about Martin and his percieved huge dropoff last year.  I would guess most Martin owners felt major drafter’s remorse after the season.  His numbers (650 PA/13HR/69RBI/18SB) were lower than his ’07 stats (620PA/19HR/87RBI/21), but that’s only part of the story.  He was another player who got off to a slow start and so by the time he started contributing, it was probably too late for his fantasy owners.

Nelson Cruz face.jpgMy final keeper was Nelson Cruz who was called up by the Rangers after absolutely tearing up triple A.  Not only was Cruz putting huge power numbers in minors (448PA/37HR/18DBL/99RBI/) but he stole 24 bags!  He continued to perform in the Bigs adding another 9 HRs, 26 RBIs and 3 SBs, while hitting .330.   At 28, he’s still fairly young and opportunity is sitting at his feet, well at least ABs are anyway.  A good start will essentially cement his place on the roster for the ’09 season.  (*drools* at the prospect of a full season of stats from him in that ballpark)

Overall, like most people at this time of the year, I’m quite happy with my 3 keepers going into the draft.  I’ll touch on some of the other teams and the players they did and did NOT keep in the next few days.

I have updated my BlogTalkRadio.com page and scheduled several upcoming shows, including a special draft episode on Saturday, February 28th.  Yep, I’m getting back in the swing of things now.  I’ve kissed my wife and kids and told them I’ll see’m in September sometime! heh

We could keep 1 player from 3 dfferent tiers of the draft, 1-7/8-14/15-26.  Undrafted players counted towards the 15-26 tier.  I think this system works well because it allows for teams to keep key elements of their existing team, but doesn’t drain the draft of big name players.  I mean every league has a new owner or two and you don’t want people coming in with no shot at improving their rosters.

Speaking of new owners, we really added some talent this year.  Ward Pettenger, Bryan Clarke and Brent Voorhees are all now serving time in JAIL!

I also want to apologize to the people who weren’t able to join this year, but there’s always next year and I’ll do everything I can to include everyone next year.

NFBC is going to JAIL, or I guess more accurately, JAIL is going to the NFBC.  I will participating in one the NFBC leagues this year with a fellow JAIL member.  BUT, I’m also sponsoring a team that will compete under the JAIL banner with two JAIL owners running the team.  Another example of some of the perks you get from simply being a member of a Johnny Archive league.

The JAIL draft will be held LIVE Feb. 28th at 6PM ET.  Join me at BlogTalkRadio.com as I broadcast the draft live.  It will be fun, entertaining and should help you with your own fantasy draft.

Notice, this was an A-Rod free post!  Doh!  So much for that.  Unlike everyone rushing to comment on A-Rod, I will let the dust settle before I chime in.  If you remember my post on ‘roids last year, you should have an idea how I feel about this “lynch-mob” mentality that is so prevelant in the world today.  He didn’t beat his wife, kill dogs or get his 5th DUI.  No, he used a substance to try and enhance his performance…just like everyone else in baseball was doing.

Everyone says he “cheated”.  Blah, Blah Blah.  This game endorses/allows stealing signs, corked bats, pine tar (and not just on bats), getting eye surgery in the off-season and managers to go out on the field to argue calls (“Daddy, why is that man kicking dirt on the umpire?”).  We want our teams to win, we want the players on our teams to perform well(how many times have you heard someone say “they need to earn all the money in that big contract”) and do everything they can to contribute to our teams being successful and yet so many people are apalled when those players do just that!

Well, so much for waiting to comment.  Bleh!

C.C. C-Ya West Coast

Hello there!

Today I’d like to start off by discussing the report that C.C. Sabathia has decided to grab the big bucks and sign with the New York Yankees for about $160 Mil.  Yikes!  That’s alot of mola.  And anytime anyone — even us grubs eeking out a paltry yearly pay rate with only 5 digits — is facing a career move salary is almost always the leading motivator.

So, do I “blame” him for caving to the wealthiest contract ever given to a pitcher?  No, not hardly.

In this day of government bailouts where we constantly hear the terms billions and trillions tossed around like a bad leaf of lettuce at the salad bar, it’s hard to believe, but $160 million just doesn’t overwhelm me like it should.  At least at first.  But let’s think about this for a second.

Barry Zito got $126 million for the G-men last year and we all know Sabathia is a much hotter property this year than Zito the soft-tosser was back then. So, it was likely, actually certain, that C.C. would bring in much more for his services.  I mean, you don’t have to be a rocket CPA to figure that out.

OK, so we all know what to expect when it comes to numbers to land the big lefty and by all I mean, C.C., his agent, the GMs, the players and of course the owners.  Yeah, you know, the ones who will be actually be forking over the loot.

So, when C.C. heads west to start the tour and receive the red carpet treatment from the teams he would prefer to play for, he must have been mildly disappointed when the team who made the biggest splash was the east coast New York Yankees.

Hrmmm, let’s see here.  The Yankees are offering the most money, by far, they are showing the most interest and are even “playing the wife card” by encourging Mrs. Sabathia to lobby for the pinstripes.  So, no, I’m not surprised which team/coast option he chose.

That being said, do I think it will be the best fit for him as a ballplayer?  Nope.  I think at some point, probably early May 2009, after he loses 2 starts in a row — though he surrendered only 3 runs in each loss – and the media begins to ponder whether C.C.’s weight is the reason for the losses while speculating that perhaps he doesn’t work hard enough in the off-season, he’ll figure it out.

Sabathia seems to do his best work when he’s left alone and allowed to show up every 5th day to do his thing.  Unfortunately, he won’t get that “alone time” and I predict at some point it will start to bother him.

I also think the west coast teams should be ashamed of themselves.  They had one of the best pitchers in the game all but begging to play for someone, anyone in Cali and they all just sat back and waited for C.C. to pick them.  Maybe I can understand the Padres and Giants not being overly aggressive because of where they are at as far as personnel these days.

But the Dodgers and Angels blew it.

As far as the fantasy angle, I now pronounce C.C. Sabathia as the next over-hyped, over-bid, over-drafted player in fantasy baseball in 2009.  Just ask Kevin Brown’s owners from a few years ago exactly what that means.

Anyone interested in joining a Johnny Archive Invitational League or J.A.I.L. should contact me here or e-mail me at johnnyarchive@johnnyarchive.com.

We are doing at least 1 more league this year and maybe 2, we’ll see.  These leagues are for experienced fantasy players/owners only.  If you think you are up to a serious challenge then perhaps you can do some time with us in J.A.I.L.?  This will be our 3rd year and simply being in one of these leagues will make you a better fantasy owner.

But be warned, last year’s reigning champ — ME, Johnny Archive — will be even tougher to beat in 2009! Muhahahahaha…
