Good News, Bad News 5/21/08

It’s that special day!  It’s mid-week and you need some insight on today’s headlines.  So, sit back and allow Johnny Archive to mildy amuse you with the latest edition of Good New, Bad News.

Good News – The San Francisco Giants have won 18 games and the organization is thrilled.
Bad News – The Colorado Rockies have won 18 games and the city is in a panic.

Good News – So far the professional Women’s Team Handball League (I’m assuming there is such a thing) appears to be free of any controversary.
gary bettman.jpgBad News – Unfortunately, the NFL has Spygate, the NBA has officials betting on and probably fixing games, MLB has ‘Roids and the NHL has Gary Bettman.

Good NewsBarack Obama won the Oregon primary last night and appears to have sealed up the Democratic nomination.
Bad NewsHilary Clinton stomped Obama in the Kentucky primary and vows to “fight on.”

Good News – The Detroit Tigers and Justin Verlander had a great night on Tuesday, getting a Win over the Seattle Mariners.
Bad News – After racing out to an 11-1 lead after 6 innings, the Tiger’s bullpen gave up 7 Runs (including 4 in the 9th) over the final 3 innings and barely hung on for a 12-8 victory.

Good NewsDoug Mathis got his first MLB start last night for the Texas Rangers.
Bad News – Mathis was left out on the mound a lot longer than normal (gave up 9 Runs) after the Rangers played extra innings the night before, using up their bullpen.

alcohol sign.jpgGood News – Consuming massive amounts of alchohol is not encuraged by MLB teams.
Bad News – Apparently that doesn’t prevent MLB teams from suffering hangovers, as the Mets, Padres, Rockies and Yankees are all still recovering from the abrupt endings to their 2007 season.

Good News – The New York Yankess got 3B Alex Rodriguez back from injury on Tuesday and he returned to form, hitting a 2-run homer.
Bad NewsMike Mussina also returned to form, getting shelled by the Baltimore Orioles.

Good News – Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andruw Jones may be able to avoid surgery on his injured right knee and stay in the lineup.
Bad News – Jones, and his .167 AVG, may be staying in the lineup.

Good News – I’m thirsty.  I’m sure glad this soda is ice cold.
Bad News – Did I just write that out loud?

charles manson.jpgGood News – Professionally trained sniffing dogs showed signs they were agitated (which means maybe they were on to something) out in the California desert at Charles Manson’s old ranch, where they were looking for remains.
Bad News – Maybe the dogs were just agitated because they were taken to the hot desert in the middle of the summer!

Good News – The Red Sox continue to sell out their home games in one of the most historic venues in MLB: Fenway Park.
Bad News – The capacity at the renowned Fenway Park is the 3rd smallest in the majors, at 36,336 — even Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Florida have bigger stadiums.

ted kennedy.jpgGood News – Senator Ted Kennedy was released from the hospital today after recently being diagnosed with Cancer.
Bad News – The United States is probably more synonymous world-wide with the Bush family name these days, rather than the Kennedys of last century.

Whether you like or dislike Ted Kennedy, he is a link to our history and I want to send out my thoughts to the Kennedy family.

Wagner Power Insulter

It’s Friday and the start of another round of interleague play, highlighted by the Mets vs. Yankees.  And what’s a better way to kickoff a subway series then another edition of the media vs the Mets players.

Billy Wagner exploded in a tirade after it dawned on him that he, the Mets Closer, was being interviewed after a game in which not only did he not get a Save, but he didn’t even pitch.  As he walked away from the press, you could here him take a little jab at his teammates who had seemingly bailed.

Uh-oh.

There’s are several teams who were favored to win a lot of teams this year who are not living up to expectations (Tigers, Mariners, Yankees etc…) but none of those teams is coming off of a year with a colossal colapse like the Mets had in 2007.

The last thing the Metropolitans need is clubhouse turmoil.  Wagner has pitched great so far in 2008, but at some point there will be a bad outing.  When that happens, he’s not going to want his ‘mates getting some revenge through the media.

I did a guest spot last night on the WireTap podcast.  It was a roundtable type show hosted by Tony Cincotta.  We talked about players who were either good buy low or sell high guys.  Now, in fairness to me, I was out with the Archive family and had to call into the show from the exclusive fine shopping establishment, Tar’get’.  But no excuses, I came up with a few guys who I felt filled the requirements.

Here’s who I tossed out there for buy low guys:

Travis Hafner Indians – I think his value is extremely low right now.  Not only were there concerns entering the ’08 season after he “slumped” in ’07 with 24 HR / 99 RBI, but with a slow start this year most people are very down on “Pronk”.  I got him in a deal I did last week, almost as a throw in.  I’m not saying he’ll be the AL MVP, but considering the entire Indians’ lineup is under-performing and Victor Martinez was hurt for a few weeks, I think Haf’ has plenty to offer for fantasy owners in 2008.

Eric Chavez Athletics – I know, I know, he’s been fading for the past years and he’ll probably never be the player he was 5 years ago.  But, again, let’s talk about value and what it would take to get Chavez, who swears he’ll be back before June 1st.  He’s more then likely on your free agent list and can be had for nothing more then a roster spot.  For taking a flier on Chavez, you give up almost nothing and potentially be rewarded with 20+ HR and 80+ RBI.  Not a bad CI guy, IMO.

Masahide Kobayashi Indians – He has 2 Saves so far this year, the second came on Thursday when he bailed out Raphael Betancourt who loaded the bases while recording only 1 out, before being yanked.  All “Yashi” did was strikeout the final two batters to nail the Save, though he did allow one run to score on a wild pitch.  This recent import from Japan had 200+ Saves so, again for a free agent pick up, you can snag some Vulture Saves.

Here’s the player I think is good sell high candidate (ran out of time so I only got to do one):

Chipper Jones Braves – He’s playing as well as anyone could have hoped thus far, so I suggest cashing in those chips now, so you don’t have to worry about him staying healthy as the weather gets warmer and players begin to wear down.  Nomar, Pedro, Nick Johnson, Rich Harden and Moises Alou have all spent, or are currently spending, time on the DL.  Anyone surprised?  Absolutely not.  Would anyone be really shocked if Chipper was added to that list of names?  Exactly.  So, play it smart and move Chipper, if you can, for a safer top-tier player.

It was not surprising to me that just about everyone else on the show disagreed with me on my player analysis.  I much prefer to be in the minority because that’s how I get the extra value out of my transactions.  That’s also why I do my blog and my podcast, because I am typically going to be talking about and suggesting contrary opinions then what people will hear/read out there in the fantasy world.  I am certainly not always right, but I will definitely provide against-the-grain insight on player evaluations, which is one of my goals.

I want to thank Tony for inviting me on the show as rather enjoyed the experience.  The other guests (Lenny Melnick and Todd the Guru to name a couple) were quite entertaining as well.  If you want to check out the archive version, you can go to this link - The Wiretap May 15 show.

Speaking of podcasts, don’t forget to check out The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show live Sunday Morning at 11:30AM Eastern for the full hour extravaganza!  You can always catch the replay at iTunes, BlogTalkRadio.com, MLBFrontOffice.com or at the Johnny Archive mothership, JohnnyArchive.com.  When in doubt, just google “Johnny Archive” and you will find me.

Weekend 12 Pack – 5/02/08

TGIF! Woot!

C’mon stimulus check, come on home baby.  Remember to be a good American and go blow your entire check on something totally trivial.

Before we continue, I want to state publicly that I cannot confirm or deny any intimate relationship between Roger Clemens and myself in the 90′s.  Even Pete Rose is amazed at “The Rocket’s” ability to prolong a lie(s).  No, Pete, I don’t want to bet if he gets nailed for perjury.  Sheesh.

Also, isn’t it amazing how quickly these people – who hated the media during their careers — jumped at the opportunity to join the guys in the studio to demonstrate their great intelligence?  I speak of John McEnroe, Bill Parcells, Dan Marino, Keyshawn Johnson and of course Bob Knight.

Okay on to the pitchers…

Weekend 12 Pack

Friday

Jeremy Guthrie Baltimore 4.34 ERA

Armando Galarrago Detroit 1.50 ERA

Luke Hochevar Kansas City 5.91 ERA

Kyle Kendrick Philadelphia 5.13 ERA

Saturday

Pat Maholm Pittsburgh 3.26 ERA

Ricky Nolasco Florida 5.13 ERA

John Lannon Washington 2.64 ERA

Jesse Litsch Toronto 4.85 ERA

Sunday

Joe Saunders Angels 2.08 ERA

Greg Smith Oakland 2.73 ERA

Bronson Arroyo Cincinnati 6.97 ERA

Todd (I have 4 E’s in my name) Wellemeyer St. Louis 4.14 ERA

Cussing Out Costas

Okay, so I’m kicking back watching some T.V. late last night, well not really watching anything, just basically flipping channels.  Isn’t it amazing how much time we can spend (waste) cruising the 5 billion channels we all have access to now-a-days?

bob costas.jpgAnyway, so I flip on HBO and I see a rerun of the show Costas Now, which apparantly was orginally filmed live in front of a studio audience this past Friday night.  It was a great episode, as the topic was sports and media and all the different angles that are associated with those.

It was really an engaging show and I found myself engulfed as the show had several big name sportscasters like Joe Buck, Dan Patrick and Mike Tirico, just to name a few, talking about the history of sports reporting, ESPN and the impact of sports radio as well as many other subjects.

Then it happened.

joe buck.jpgSomehow the topic of fantasy sports was brought into the dialog and almost immediately Costas spewed the typical insulting words so many use when they think they’ll earn brownie points from “serious” sports authorities or fans.  The over-used cliche that I find disgusting and derogatory, which I feel is totally uncalled for is, of course, ”Fantasy Geeks.”

Now, am I overly sensitive?  Yes.  But that’s what makes me the super sensual animal that I am.  Don’t believe me?  Just ask Mrs. Archive.  Oh yeah, Johnny Archive puts the fantasy in fantasy baseball.  Okay, I’ve drifted off point here, sorry.

My point is that Costas was hosting an excellent and informative show covering the full spectrum of sports.  He remained tactful when he discussed sports radio, sports blogs and how ESPN has promoted screamfest shows like Around The Horn and PTI.

mike tirico.jpgBut somehow those of us who are dedicated sports enthusiasts who happen to have a passion for fantasy sports, we are thrown to the bottom rung of the ladder of sports fans.

Costas asked Buck if he understood the hub-bub about fantasy sports to which Buck replied he played in a league once but finished last and never messed with it again.  So, obviously, these legends of broadcasting have no real idea how fantasy sports works and yet they dismiss it and us with ease.

Really irks me.

Fantasy sports promotes a level of education and dedication by the average fan that helps the individual sports massively, as a whole.  How else could MLB get baseball fans in central Texas to care who is the 4th starter for the San Francisco Giants?  Or baseball fans in New York City to care about anybody outside of the Yankees? (smirk)

I predict before too long some reputable media outlet — ESPN or maybe even HBO/Costas Now – will do a fair and indepth report on the impact of fantasy sports on the real sports world.  Another revelation will be who these “Geeks” truly are and just how widespread the foundation of fans is, finally giving the fantasy industry its due respect.

Maybe I should invite Costas onto The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show and help him better understand fantasy baseball!?!  Yeah, you guessed it, I’m sleep-typing again. Heh.

Okay, well I encourage everyone to check out Costas Now as it is a great show and this latest episode was incredible, save the Fantasy Geeks comment.  And if you see Costas, tell him Johnny Archive is looking for him!

Good News, Bad News 04/30/08

If you’ve been keeping score at home, yes, I have missed a few days recently.  Hey, what can I say, I may occasionally miss a day here and there.  Just think of the added anticipation build up as an added bonus.

Well, it’s Wednesday and it’s SHOWTIME!

Good News – With expanded cable channels, the Internet and podcasts, there is a ton of resources out there for all kinds of information.
Bad News – Do we really need a half-dozen infomercials that are constantly run and devoted exclusively to products that clean out my bowels?

kevin trudeau.jpgGood News – With all the additional sources of broadcasting, many people who may otherwise not have made it on network television are now given the opportunity to be seen.
oxyclean guy.jpgBad News – Ron Popeil, Kevin Trudeau and that black-bearded dude, who is always talking with his hands and screaming at us to buy cleaning products, are familiar faces.

Good News – Thanks to the MLB.TV baseball package, I get to watch a ton of baseball games live on my computer.
Bad News- When there’s no baseball on, I obviously spend too much time watching T.V. and stupid infomercials.

Good News – The NBA is not going to suspend anyone for the incident the other night during the 76ers and Celtics game where a few of the players on the bench took a step onto the court during a ruckus, which technically violated the rule intended to keep major brawls from taking place.
Bad News – MLB has no such rule, so every time a pitcher goes a little too far inside with a fastball we end up with players running in from all over the field creating a state of chaos.

Good News – Aspiring singers all over the world had to be encouraged several years ago when a 15-year-old girl got her big break performing in a karoke club.
Bad News – Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea after all for a teenager to go up to the room of a married, 28-year-old professional baseball player — Roger Clemens – for “career advice”?

willie nelson.jpgGood News – Country star Willie Nelson turns 75 years old today!
Bad News - Elderly folks all over Texas are going to start following his secret to longevity — smoking pot and not paying taxes.

Good News - Barack Obama learned that right-wing, conservative, white men are not his greatest enemy.
Bad News – Nope, it appears an out-spoken black preacher, whom he considered a friend, is capable of much more damage.

phil donahue.jpgGood News – The original open forum talk show host Phil Donahue has a new movie coming out.
Bad News – In this world of mass media, Donahue had his last show cancelled because he openly speculated that perhaps going to war with IRAQ might not be a good idea.

Good News – The world of fantasy baseball remains as unpredictable as ever, especially when it comes to injuries, which is what keeps it fun and interesting.
Bad News – The player everyone thought was 100% risk-free as the undisputed #1 overall pick, Alex Rodriguez, is on the DL and the player people were leary of, Albert Pujols, is playing well and feeling just fine.

Good News - My latest podcast was my highest rated show yet.  I had more live listeners and archive hits than any show so far.
Bad News – The bidding war between Fox Sports and ESPN has already started.  I was hoping it wouldn’t get ugly, with both sides throwing such big numbers back and forth, but now I can relate to what King, Imus and Stern must’ve went through.  Yes, I’m sleep-typing…but, it’s nice to dream…

Don’t forget to tune in tonight at Midnight Eastern to catch the lastest installment of The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show at BlogTalkRadio.com and MLBFrontOffice.com.

Have a great day!

Good News, Bad News 04/23/08

Okay, we’re back in the swing of things.  It’s Wednesday, so you know what that means!

Good News – I did my first song dedication on my podcast this past Sunday.
Bad News – The song, Blink 182′s What’s My Age Again? went out to Astros SS Miggy Tejada — or Tejeda according to his birth certificate.

Sleeping Man.jpgGood News – The world of sports continues to expand.
Bad News – All kinds of activities are now considered sports.  For instance: playing cards, fishing, spelling and even eating are all grueling tests of one’s determination, strength and endurance.

Good News – The world of sports continues to expand part #2.
Bad News – What’s next? The USBL — the United States Breathing Leagues?!?  NSA — National Sleep Association (Wait, we already have that, it’s called the NBA regular season).

Michael Dukakis.jpgGood News – After Hillary won PA, the democratic party gets to continue its marathon of choosing a candidate for 2008 presidential election.
Bad News – Clinton and Obama are going to be so worn out and torn to shreds by each other that by the time either one faces McCain the America people will be sick of both of them.  Where’s Michael Dukakis when we need him?!

Hank Steinbrenner.jpgGood News – New York Yankees baseball fans don’t have to worry that the team will not be getting as much press now that George Steinbrenner is getting older and calmer.
Bad News – Hank “the Tank” is off to a great start spewing nonsense and keeping the clubhouse filled with reporters asking the players and coaches for reactions to his statements.

Good News – Joe Torre dosn’t seem to be having any issues transitioning back to NL-style baseball.
Bad News – Well, except for trying to put 4 outfielders in his lineup everyday.  He just can’t wait for interleague play to start!

Stephen a smith.jpgGood News – With the NBA playoffs under way we get to see more of the analysts who specialize on basketball.
Bad News – Yippee! More Stephen A. Smith and his smooth, gracious basketball breakdowns.  Quite Frankly, I think he is a little angry about something.

Good NewsAlfonso Soriano is due back to the Cubbies on May 1st.
Bad News – Chicago is playing better without “so-So” in the lineup.

Good News – Brewers 1B Prince Fielder continues to pass on meat when it’s put in front of him, even though some have speculated that his new diet is to blame for his lack of power in ’08.
bobby jenks.jpgBad News – White Sox RP Bobby Jenks apparently is following Fielder around gobbling up all the leftovers as he continues to get bigger and bigger.

Good News – My JAIL league team is NOT in last place!
Bad News – I’m closer to last than I am to first place.  But hey, considering my top 5 draft picks have been off to slow starts or hurt (Soriano, Braun, Roberts, Atkins, Mauer) I’m actually hanging in there.

Don’t forget The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show tonight (Weds) at Midnight Eastern Time / 11PM Central.

Weekend 12 Pack – 4/18/08

TGIF Everybody!

I hope you all have a terrific Friday and a glorious weekend.  I will do my part by giving you 12 starting pitchers who should be available on your free-agent lists.

Now, don’t drop Jake Peavy for these guys.  This is simply a list for you to choose from when deciding whether or not to Pitch or Ditch.  These are pitchers who have favorable match-ups, have a shot at a WIN and hopefully will provide a decent ERA/WHIP/K.  Remember, these guys are available for a reason, so keep your expectations in check.

Alright,  release the hounds!

Weekend 12 Pack

Friday

Andrew Miller, Marlins – Yes, I know his ERA is 11.37, but he has decent strikeout numbers 15K/12.2 IP and the Nats don’t exactly sting like a bee.  Pitching in Florida’s home park should help keep those fly balls from being homers.

Todd Wellemeyer, Cardinals – Remember him?  Same guy, pitching against the same team (Giants) as last week’s Weekend 12 Pack.  He didn’t do so hot, 5ER, but did notch 7 whiffs.  Let’s trot him back out there at home and look for better results.  I’m not thrilled about Matt Cain being his mound opponent, but hopefully we’ll see a 3-1 game either way.

Samson and lion.jpgChris Sampson, Astros
– This is scary, considering any starter in Coors Field makes me want to hurl; but the Rox played a 22 Inning marathon last night in San Diego and could be flat.  Sampson isn’t going to strike out a lot of batters, which is a real bummer in Denver, but he can keep the ball on the ground.  The Astros need to score early and turn the game into a yawner.  Something like 9-3 Houston.

Cliff Lee, Indians – This lefty pitched a gem his last time out 8IP/1ER/8K/0BB.  With Victor Martinez back as the everyday catcher, I think the Cleveland staff should settle down some.  Plus, having his bat in the lineup helps big time, as well.  The Twins are still working with Liriano to get him back to 100%, which he is not now.  The Indians are scoring runs and are patient at the plate, as they win fairly easy 7-2.

Saturday

Jon Lester, Red Sox – I’m still giving him a pass based on the Japan trip, but it’s time for him to put up a solid start.  The Rangers come to town and Jason Jennings will serve as a good bp tosser.  The ‘Sox should win easy, allowing Lester to relax and throw strikes. I see 6IP/6K/2BB and WIN in his future.

Greg Smith, Athletics – Another A’s pitcher evolving into a reliable source of pitching production.  Last time out he went 7IP/1ER/1BB/4K.  Matches up against Zack Greinke at home, so a low scoring game is probable.  Amazing that a “W” is in doubt with the Royals as the rival, but K.C. is vastly improved this year.

Burke Badenhop, Marlins – What a great name.  I know, I picked against him last week with Wandy Rodriguez in Houston.  But at home, versus the Nationals and Shawn Hill, I’ll bop around the clock with Badenhop. Feel free to sing that when he pitches, but only if you pick him up and use him.  I see a sloppy Nats defense allowing the Fish a couple extra runs and that’s enough for a B-Bad Win!

Tom Gorzelanny, Pirates – Gorzy comes in with a robust 6.75 ERA, but he’s better than that and assuming that the wind is blowing in, this should be a chance for the Buco’s to snag a WIN in Chi-town.  It’s not exactly a “Marquis” matchup with Jason on the bump for the Cubbies, but Pittsburgh hitters don’t mind as Walks should be plentiful.

Sunday

Jonathan Sanchez, Giants – What!?  You’re suggesting a Giants pitcher?!  Slow down with the pain killers, Archive-boy.  I know, but let’s be bold.  With Troy Glaus struggling, most of the power is left-handed for the Cards.  So, if Sanchez — and yes, it’s a big “if” – can keep Albert Pujols from launching rockets, he could rack up 6-8 strikeouts and a 5-3 Win.

Elmer's Glue.jpgOdaliz Perez, Nationals
– And now a Nats pitcher.  No more glue sniffing, Elmer’s-head!  Yes, the Nats make me nervous, too, but Florida isn’t exactly an RBI factory.  Scott Olson has pitched well so far this season, so he’s due to throw a stinker, especially at home where he has a problem keeping his cool.  Honestly, the pickings are a little slim on Sunday, so neener.

John Danks, White Sox – Dank-you very much for that fine start last time out.  John-boy went 7.2IP/0ER/2BB/4K.  With renewed confidence, he keeps the Rays dimmed and under control.  Edwin Jackson, who starts for Tamp Bay, continues to revert to the tactics of old — walking batters-o-plenty — as the ‘Sox roll to an easy Win.

Nate Robertson, Tigers – Now this pick hurts because I have A.J. Burnett on 2 of my teams.  But with A.J. pitching in relief the other night and taking the loss, I need to play it safe and bench him here versus the Motor City Kitties who continue to bust out from their slow start.

There ya’ go, may thy stats be blessed and favorable for thee fantasy team.

Don’t forget The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show is on at the NEW time — Sunday 11:30AM Eastern/10:30AM Central — and will be a full action-packed 60 minutes of fantasy bliss!!!

Good News, Bad News 04/16/08

Here it is; your weekly fix of Good News, Bad News.  Yesterday was a crazy day for my fantasy teams and I’m sure many of you have taken a few hits with injuries as well.

Everyone has low points in the season when it seems like every baseball headline is a “body blow” directed squarely at their team.  There are many different tactics to choose from, but regardless of which you choice, keep your sense of humor and remember it happens to everybody.  Injuries, slumps and (bad) luck are all part of baseball and, of course, fantasy baseball.

Good News – I picked up Indians pitcher Rafael Betancourt on Monday just in case troubled Closer Joe Borowski faltered.
> Bad News – The Fantasy Gods like to play giveth and taketh away.  While it’s true, Borowski did indeed explode on the mound Monday and end up on the DL, it was the only positive news I’d get on Tuesday.

Alfonso Soriano.jpg>Good News
– I no longer have to be concerned with where Alfonso Soriano is put in the Cubs batting order.
Bad News - Soriano injured his calf — though I have a feeling the achillies tendon may be involved — Tuesday night and will not be batting at all, anywhere, any time soon.

>Good News – Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun should be rested when he returns to the line up.
Bad News- He was benched Tuesday because he is hitting .226 and has these beautiful stats 11K/0BB/3HR/9RBI/0SB.

>Good News – Brewers 1B Prince Fielder was concerned with his health and changed his diet in the off-season and became a vegetarian.
Bad NewsSOMEBODY buy this dude a steak!!!!  He has lost his power – ZERO homers so far in 2008.

Jose Valverde wig.jpg>Good News
- With B.J. Ryan back from injury and hopefully Betancourt taking over as Closer for the Indians, I may end up with 4 Closers in the JAIL league.
Bad News - One of the other two Closers on my team is Jose “I ATE THE WORM” Valverde of the Astros.(Jose pictured above wearing a blonde wig)

>Good News – The San Francisco Giants organization and fans were thrilled when they opened their new stadium, AT&T Park, a few years ago and got out of Candlestick Park which was famous for its trash tornadoes.
Bad News - You’d think a fancy-smancy new stadium designed for baseball wouldn’t have a stairwell that is like 10-feet deep located right where third basemen go to reach for typical pop-ups.  Snakes 3B, Mark Reynolds, almost broke his neck for cripes-sake — luckily he broke the fall with his face on the rail.

>Good News - I was offered a trade for Jose “I Wish I Was A Bullfighter“ Valverde and I am definitely entertaining offers for him.
Bad News - I was offered 2 players, Ken Griffey, Jr. and Daniel Cabrera.  One problem, the team doesn’t have Cabrera on his team anymore – he waived him for a free-agent pick up.

>Good News -  I picked up Dodger pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo for a pitch-and-ditch start for Tuesday and the Dodgers rolled to an 11-2 win.
Bad News – Kuo, on a very tight pitch count, lasted only 4 Innings after 3 Walks in the first Inning and didn’t qualify for the Win.  Grrrr.

army men.jpg>Good News
– I still got it!  I can still remember how to build a pretty decent army-man fort in the dirt.
Bad News – I have to learn to build my army-man forts faster because after kneeling in the dirt for an hour, the strain on my back and knees left me screaming “MEDIC, MEDIC.” My boys thought I was still pretending and ran over with their toy helicopter.

>Good News – The Yankees and Red Sox are playing another series and we all get to have the media hype shoved down our throats again.

Invasion of the bodysnatchers.jpgBad News
– Reported as a Red Sox tid-bit, the true story of that jersey is that the real David Ortiz was wearing it when it was placed in the concrete.  He fell asleep, just like in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and now some alien is prancing around as “Big Papi.” (Remember that dog with the old-man’s face/head on it? Creepy.)

Okay, that is all for now.  Don’t forget to tune into The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show tonight at it’s new time,  Midnight Eastern.

Totals – 7 WINS/21ER/66.2IP/42K/20BB/64H

Not too shabby, so hopefully you cashed in a few of those picks.  I’ll try and post my Weekend 12 Pack every Friday right here on this very blog.  You’re excited about that, aren’t you?  Good, good.

Okay, time to pass on some random weirdness and general baseball tidbits.

Juan Samuel.jpg- Do you remember Juan Samuel — he played 2B for the Dodgers and the Phillies back in the 90′s?  Well, he must not read the same parenting and naming books we all do because he gave one of his sons the first name, ”Samuel”.

- The Texas Rangers had a starting pitcher throw more then 110 pitches only 4 times the entire 2007 season.  Already in 2008, they have had 4 starters go 110+ pitches.

- “Why buy good luggage?  You only use it when you travel.” — Yogi Berra

- Who was the first player to homer in Canada in both leagues? Richie Zisk of the Pittsburgh Pirates homered in both Montreal and Toronto.  (courtesy of The Baseball Almanac)

- Jose Valverde of the Houston Astros led the majors in Saves last year for the Arizona Diamondbacks, with 47.  He had 10 Saves in April in ’07.  He has 1 so far this year.

Randy Johnson.jpg- Randy Johnson of the Arizona D-Backs went 5 Innings in his first start of 2008 — a no decision – last night versus the San Fransico Giants and gave up 0 Earned Runs with 7 K’s.  In 2007, the “Big Unit” started his season off against the San Diego Padres and also went 5 Innings and had 7 K’s.  Though last year he gave up 6 Earned Runs and hit 2 batters en route to the loss.

Okay, that’s a wrap.

iHappy Day!

Hello Sportsfans,

I hope you are having a great weekend!  We’ve had some exciting baseball action this weekend, unless of course, you are a fan of the Cleveland Indians’ starting pitching.  But don’t despair, C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona will get it together soon.

I am in a very good mood.  Can you tell?

For the past few weeks, I have been talking to the folks at iTunes and I am proud to announce that The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show is now available on iTunes!!!  You can find the show from the podcast main menu, simply type in “Johnny Archive”.

A big “thank you” goes out to those of you have listened to the show and requested iTunes make it available.  The show is a work in progress, but definitely a labor of love.

On tonight’s show, I will be announcing a few changes to the schedule.  So, tune in or be sure to catch the archived edition on iTunes, MLBFrontOffice.com, BlogTalkRadio.com or at JohnnyArchive.com.

I have a lot of ideas and plans for the show, so buckle yourself in and get ready for some fun.  Lately, I have been getting a lot of people showing interest on being on or a part of the show.  So, that’s always a good sign and I am in the midst of working out the scheduling.  As they say, stay tuned for more details in the future.

By the way, here’s my latest YouTube promo:

Okay, that’s about it for now.  I’ll be back Monday to recap how the pitchers I recommended for the weekend did and kick off another week of dramatic MLB.

I am Johnny Archive and this post is over.
