Big Weekend: New Digs & Putting My ‘Boys’ Up

It’s Christmas Eve for baseball fans! Tomorrow is the first official game of the season.  Lots of excitement to be sure.  Of course fantasy fanatics are jazzed, but Opening Day is all about real baseball as fans from all over the world get to celebrate the start of MLB baseball.

This year, we’ve got a few other big stories adding to the hoopla.  Sure, most people are probably nervous about me doing my NFBC draft Saturday April 4th at 5pm ET knowing that if I don’t win this league I will undergo an intense surgical procedure, the VASECTOMY!  I have big plans for the Johnny Archive Snip-Snips as this team is affectionately known.

On top of that high drama situation, New York is debuting two new stadiums!  We all got a peek at them as they played exibition games Friday Night.  Here’s my take on them based on my limited exposure.

New Yankee Stadium – I am quite underwhelmed.  Sorry, but they basically made the same stadium next to the old one.  On T.V. it is almost impossible to tell a difference.  I’m not sure what is supposed to be exciting about that?  I’m sure it’s better for the fans that are actually in the ballpark, but since they jacked-up the ticket prices to help pay for the place, not as many “average” fans will be able to experience it.  Plus, if you’re going to make a new stadium in this century, put a lid on it!  Rain-outs are a bummer and since we have the advancements to put on a retractable roof and still keep the building look good, it should be a requirement for all new stadiums.

New Mets Stadium – Now this is a cool looking place!  It’s crisp, clean and even through the T.V. it feels new.  Maybe it’s because the old Shea Stadium was so ugly, but this place really jumps out at you.  Mets fans deserve a true home field that makes baseball an enjoyable experience and not a quest to see if you can make it through alive.  It’s still hard to tell if it will benefit hitters or pitchers more, but the reduced foul territory should help get the batters another whack or two.  If I had to choose which of the new stadiums I like better, I bet you can guess already, but yeah, I think the new Mets home park is by far the better looking place.

Grand_Slam_277x180-1.gifOkay, with that, I’m back to doing some last minute evaluating of my potential draft picks for the NFBC draft.  The draft will be held at MockDraftCentral.com at 4pm ET.  Speaking of MockDraftCentral.com, Geoff Stein, will be my special guest on tomorrow’s edition of The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show — my first live show as a member of the Fantasy Baseball Channel at BlogTalkRadio.com.

Remember, tomorrow my show moves to its new time, 5pm ET on Sundays.  If you get a chance, please swing by and check out the show live or catch the archive version at iTunes.com.

Take care and enjoy the start of the season!

JAIL Keepers and More

Hey there,

I thought I’d pass on some inside information on the “haps” within the JAIL league.  As some of you may remember, we put in keepers (3) starting with the 2009 season.  So, here are the players kept;

We could keep 1 player from 3 dfferent tiers of the draft, 1-7/8-14/15-26.  Undrafted players counted towards the 15-26 tier.  I think this system works well because it allows for teams to keep key elements of their existing team, but doesn’t drain the draft of big name players.  I mean every league has a new owner or two and you don’t want people coming in with no shot at improving their rosters.

Speaking of new owners, we really added some talent this year.  Ward Pettenger, Bryan Clarke and Brent Voorhees are all now serving time in JAIL!

I also want to apologize to the people who weren’t able to join this year, but there’s always next year and I’ll do everything I can to include everyone next year.

NFBC is going to JAIL, or I guess more accurately, JAIL is going to the NFBC.  I will participating in one the NFBC leagues this year with a fellow JAIL member.  BUT, I’m also sponsoring a team that will compete under the JAIL banner with two JAIL owners running the team.  Another example of some of the perks you get from simply being a member of a Johnny Archive league.

The JAIL draft will be held LIVE Feb. 28th at 6PM ET.  Join me at BlogTalkRadio.com as I broadcast the draft live.  It will be fun, entertaining and should help you with your own fantasy draft.

Notice, this was an A-Rod free post!  Doh!  So much for that.  Unlike everyone rushing to comment on A-Rod, I will let the dust settle before I chime in.  If you remember my post on ‘roids last year, you should have an idea how I feel about this “lynch-mob” mentality that is so prevelant in the world today.  He didn’t beat his wife, kill dogs or get his 5th DUI.  No, he used a substance to try and enhance his performance…just like everyone else in baseball was doing.

Everyone says he “cheated”.  Blah, Blah Blah.  This game endorses/allows stealing signs, corked bats, pine tar (and not just on bats), getting eye surgery in the off-season and managers to go out on the field to argue calls (“Daddy, why is that man kicking dirt on the umpire?”).  We want our teams to win, we want the players on our teams to perform well(how many times have you heard someone say “they need to earn all the money in that big contract”) and do everything they can to contribute to our teams being successful and yet so many people are apalled when those players do just that!

Well, so much for waiting to comment.  Bleh!

C.C. C-Ya West Coast

Hello there!

Today I’d like to start off by discussing the report that C.C. Sabathia has decided to grab the big bucks and sign with the New York Yankees for about $160 Mil.  Yikes!  That’s alot of mola.  And anytime anyone — even us grubs eeking out a paltry yearly pay rate with only 5 digits — is facing a career move salary is almost always the leading motivator.

So, do I “blame” him for caving to the wealthiest contract ever given to a pitcher?  No, not hardly.

In this day of government bailouts where we constantly hear the terms billions and trillions tossed around like a bad leaf of lettuce at the salad bar, it’s hard to believe, but $160 million just doesn’t overwhelm me like it should.  At least at first.  But let’s think about this for a second.

Barry Zito got $126 million for the G-men last year and we all know Sabathia is a much hotter property this year than Zito the soft-tosser was back then. So, it was likely, actually certain, that C.C. would bring in much more for his services.  I mean, you don’t have to be a rocket CPA to figure that out.

OK, so we all know what to expect when it comes to numbers to land the big lefty and by all I mean, C.C., his agent, the GMs, the players and of course the owners.  Yeah, you know, the ones who will be actually be forking over the loot.

So, when C.C. heads west to start the tour and receive the red carpet treatment from the teams he would prefer to play for, he must have been mildly disappointed when the team who made the biggest splash was the east coast New York Yankees.

Hrmmm, let’s see here.  The Yankees are offering the most money, by far, they are showing the most interest and are even “playing the wife card” by encourging Mrs. Sabathia to lobby for the pinstripes.  So, no, I’m not surprised which team/coast option he chose.

That being said, do I think it will be the best fit for him as a ballplayer?  Nope.  I think at some point, probably early May 2009, after he loses 2 starts in a row — though he surrendered only 3 runs in each loss – and the media begins to ponder whether C.C.’s weight is the reason for the losses while speculating that perhaps he doesn’t work hard enough in the off-season, he’ll figure it out.

Sabathia seems to do his best work when he’s left alone and allowed to show up every 5th day to do his thing.  Unfortunately, he won’t get that “alone time” and I predict at some point it will start to bother him.

I also think the west coast teams should be ashamed of themselves.  They had one of the best pitchers in the game all but begging to play for someone, anyone in Cali and they all just sat back and waited for C.C. to pick them.  Maybe I can understand the Padres and Giants not being overly aggressive because of where they are at as far as personnel these days.

But the Dodgers and Angels blew it.

As far as the fantasy angle, I now pronounce C.C. Sabathia as the next over-hyped, over-bid, over-drafted player in fantasy baseball in 2009.  Just ask Kevin Brown’s owners from a few years ago exactly what that means.

Anyone interested in joining a Johnny Archive Invitational League or J.A.I.L. should contact me here or e-mail me at johnnyarchive@johnnyarchive.com.

We are doing at least 1 more league this year and maybe 2, we’ll see.  These leagues are for experienced fantasy players/owners only.  If you think you are up to a serious challenge then perhaps you can do some time with us in J.A.I.L.?  This will be our 3rd year and simply being in one of these leagues will make you a better fantasy owner.

But be warned, last year’s reigning champ — ME, Johnny Archive — will be even tougher to beat in 2009! Muhahahahaha…

Joba Jabbing

Hello there,

Tony Bartlett, author of the Tuesday Morning segment regularly seen here on this very blog at this time, is dealing with life stuff and will be back next week to enlighten us with his unique perspective.

So, what about today?

Well, you get bonus Johnny Archive time with no additional charge! Woot!

Let’s focus on the New York Yankees today shall we?

brian cashman.jpgOkay, let me state up front that I am not a fan of the Yankees, and though I have had some issues with Brian Cashman and the way he has done his job as GM, I am also not a Yankee-hater.  I’m Yankee-neutral, so I think you can take my opinion on the subject of Joba as totally unbiased and founded in typical baseball logic.

Lets see, should I start with my thoughts overall on whether or not I think Joba Chamberlain should have been moved to the starting rotation or should I break down the last few games and Joba’s impact or potential impact? hrmmmm….

I’ll go with big picture first.  I felt moving Joba to the rotation was a knee-jerk decision and one with the focus being on the short term.  The possible “good” that could come from Joba becoming a starting pitcher and having success was, in my opinion, not worth the much more likely negative impact on Joba and the team overall.

joba2.jpgI understood the thinking that Joba had shown in the past that he could handle the extra innings, and with the young Yankee arms (Kennedy, Hughes etc…) struggling, the situation seemed desperate enough and warrent such a radical move — yes, taking your lockdown 8th inning guy and sure-fire closer-of-the-future and making him a starter is a radical move, especially when you do it mid-season.

The obvious question when the move was announced — and it didn’t help that the new Stein Man had publicly called for it — was who would assume Joba’s role in the ‘pen?  Good ol’ whipping boy, Farnsy, wasn’t exactly a crowd or organizational fave’.  LaTroy Hawkins who had been a  decent set-up man in the past wasn’t exactly fitting in as a Yankee.  So, a void was indeed created.

Knowing what we know now, that deals were in the works – like the addition of Pirates closer Damaso Marte — seem to indicate a plan, so that’s good.  A few days or so, at least, of adjustment time was incorporated into the plan to allow for a pecking order to work itself out in the ‘pen.  Okay.  So, are all the bases covered?  Well, kinda.

Joba1.jpgOver the past few weeks, even with Joba not really getting off to a great start in his first gig as a starter, he settled into a top-end type pitcher, one where when he is slated to go, the team can expect to be given a legit shot at a ”W”.  Okay, so the issue is settled right?  Erm, no.

Let’s go back in time, not too far, just to a few days ago…Sunday 8/03 at Yankee Stadium.  The Yanks’ are battling the best team in baseball, the LA Angels and have an 8-5 lead going to the 8th inning.  Now, at the start of the season that would’ve mean it was Joba-time!  Not now, though.  Instead it’s Edwar (anyone see a “d” laying around?) Ramirez time!  Actually, Mark Teixeira decided to make it Tex-Time, as he belted his first grand salami as a Angel to thrust the Halo’s into a 9-8 lead.

You would’ve thought that a nationally televised meltdown by the Yankee bullpen would have brought up a storm of controversy about Joba not being there to shut the door?  right?  Probably, but the Yankee bats took care of that by ripping off 6 Runs in the bottom of the 8th and thus giving the Bombers a 14-9 Win.

Now, it’s Monday (yesterday) 8/04 and Joba’s turn to take the hill in Texas.  Entering the game Joba has pitched approx 85 Innings on the season, but 60 of them in the last 8 weeks.  Pitching in 105 degree Texas heat is tough for anyone, but especially for a young pitcher who had only 24 major league innings of experience coming into 2008, is not exactly a fitness buff and is learning to be a starter in the Bigs.

He ends up going 4 2/3 innings, giving up 8 Hits / 2 BB / 5ER.  But as we know, the real bad news is that he has some shoulder pain issues now.  Uh-oh.  Let’s get back to the game for a minute though, because there’s still some drama to play out.

joe girardi.jpgOne thing a manager has to do that is always open to debate is manage his pitching staff.  Knowing when to yank a guy or let him go another out or two.  Now, it only seems reasonable that the more you know a pitcher, the easier it is to know when the tank is empty.  In this case, Yankees manager Joe Girardi is trying to determine how long to go with the newly acquired Marte, a lefty.

It’s the 9th inning, the pitches are starting to mount up and you really want Marte on the mound in case basher lefty Josh Hamilton makes it to the plate.  Unfortunately, batting in front of Hammy, is known clutch hitter Michael Young, who is a righty.  What to do….

Marlon Byrd.jpgGirardi decides to roll with Marte, because the thought of facing Hammy without your top lefty on the mound is just too scary.  Good news, Young flies out.  So, it’s Marte versus Hamilton.  The game’s on the line, 2 out, 2 on.  Semi-good news, Hamilton walks — which is basically a victory for the Yankees.  But, wha, huh, now you have righty Marlon Byrd up and a drained lefty who has thrown 40+ pitches in the inning.  Oh no, Joe, say it isn’t so….BAM…grand slam!

It makes you wonder, did Girardi know Marte enough to know when he was out of gas?  Would the situation have played out better had Joba been in the mix to deal with the tough righties?

jerry seinfeld.jpgNow, you don’t have Joba as a starter or a reliever, you still have a hole against righties in none-save situations and losses are starting to pile up.  Stay tuned, to see how this ends, but it doesn’t look good at the moment.  Well, unless you’re a Mets fan.
