Zobrist Not Z-Fluke
Okay, it’s almost here, the day we celebrate Dads. As a dad, I can say that I don’t need/want anything major, but a good hug from our kid(s) is always perfect!
The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show will, of course, be live on the air Sunday starting at 5pm ET. We’d love to have you in the chatroom with us, but if catching an archived version — like at iTunes — is better for you then that is perfectly fine, as well.
I’d like to once again thank each and everyone of you who has listened to the podcast. Hack and I really enjoy putting it together for you each week. Because of you, we continue to grow and we are quickly becoming known throughout the fantasy sports world. We look forward to doing all we can to help prepare you for a successful fantasy experience.
We know you are serious about fantasy sports and we treat our listeners with the respect you deserve. We also know that there are a lot of options out there in the fantasy market, so we’ll continue to provide you with the very latest news and advice, as well as some genuine, unique entertainment.
Most sites charge you for their stats, updates and opinions, but no Johnny Archive listener/reader has ever paid for anything. Your kind words of praise and encouragement are payment enough! Please keep the coming!!
Okay, onward we go…
Carlos Gonzalez OF COL – Hit his first HR as a member of the Rockies on Thursday. This is a very talented player and even though the Rox have some depth at the position, this kid is legit and might emerge as primetime fantasy player before the end of the year.
Clint Barmes SS COL – Hit his 7th bomb of the season on Thursday. This underrated 2B AND SS eligible player is hitting .296 and brings a touch of speed and power to the MI.
Ubaldo Jimenez SP COL - Evened his record at 6-6 on the season with a solid outing on Thursday. The start was at the hitter-friendly Coors Field, but when Ub-Jim is on it doesn’t matter where he’s dealing. The ERA is a very respectable 3.73 and as long as he keeps his Walks down, he’ll provide nice WHIP and SO numbers, currently has 76/38 SO/BB rate in 89.1 IP.
Ben Zobrist 2B/SS/OF TB – This former prospect was hitting 5th Thursday behind Upton, Crawford, Longoria and Pena. If he remains in the thick of the lineup there’s no reason to think he can’t conintue to be productive. He’s only a .245 hitter in the big leagues in 657 ABs, so many will feel a drop is coming. But I say not so fast my friend, B-Z is a career .318 hitter in over 1300 minor league ABs and at 28, this swtich-hitter is not a fluke. Be thrilled if some owner in your league tries to pawn this unknown off on you for something relatively cheap.
Marco Scutaro SS TOR – Made one of the coolest plays of the year on Thursday when he turned a walk into a double by taking advantage of a sleeping Philly defense. Scut’s is hitting .302 with 5 HR and 7 SB so fsr this year. At 33, I’m not convinced this .265 career hitter can continue to be this productive, but he’s a fun guy to watch and root for.
Jimmy Rollins SS PHI – He’s been off to a horrible start thus far in 2009, as his .225 AVG would suggest. Perhaps Thursday was a good omen when he went 3-4 with a HR/2RBI/2R. The entire Phillies team has come back to earth in ’09 as they defend their ’08 title. These guys are vets and have proven track records so they figure to get rolling at some point. For example, Rollins is 50 points below his career average of .275 and once he gets more hits you have to figure on increases in SB and power.
Tommy Hanson SP ATL – This might be the guy that gets called up and has a major impact on fantasy leagues. Coel Hamels was that guy a few years ago and when it comes FAAB bidding these are the type of players that it’s worth to blow a big chunk on. Not only are they impressive players, and should be for many, many years, but by them coming up early in the year can actually help this year. Sure, he’s pitched himself into trouble in each of his starts so far, but he has the stuff to get out of it. I spent nearly 30% of my annual FAAB budget on Hanson and I am so glad I got him.
That’s about it for now. Oh yeah, let me take a moment to wish Hack and Mrs. Hack a happy 1st Anniversary!!! They are celebrating with a nice and well-earned vacation to northern California. Have fun and remember you only have 1 more year of newlywed-ness!

JA’s J.A.I.L. Team, Post Draft
Hey Gang,
I’m just kinda chillin’ today after a very busy weekend where I did 3 shows, including the 2-hour marathon broadcast of the 2009 J.A.I.L. Draft live at BlogTalkRadio.com. By the way, the draft show was one of my highest rated shows ever in terms of live listeners. Thanks to everyone who found time Saturday to check out the show. I apologize to the callers who I did not get too.
I had a great podcast on Sunday, when I was able to get Jeff Erickson of Rotowire.com to find time in his very busy schedule to make a guest appearance. There was a few technical sound issues, but other than that it was a interesting conversation on Jeff’s background and his thoughts on the fantasy sports industry.
Alot of great guests are confirmed for upcoming shows including; Cory Schwartz of MLB.com, Bob Sikon of fantasybaseballtrademarket.com, Mike Siano Director of Programming of MLB.com, Zach Steinhorn of Fantasy 411 and MLBlogs.com and Alex Cushing fantasy writer at MLB.com and Tout Wars participant.
It’s going to be a great 2009 season at The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show!

Good News, Bad News 04/30/08
If you’ve been keeping score at home, yes, I have missed a few days recently. Hey, what can I say, I may occasionally miss a day here and there. Just think of the added anticipation build up as an added bonus.
Well, it’s Wednesday and it’s SHOWTIME!
Good News – With expanded cable channels, the Internet and podcasts, there is a ton of resources out there for all kinds of information.
Bad News – Do we really need a half-dozen infomercials that are constantly run and devoted exclusively to products that clean out my bowels?
Good News – With all the additional sources of broadcasting, many people who may otherwise not have made it on network television are now given the opportunity to be seen.
Bad News – Ron Popeil, Kevin Trudeau and that black-bearded dude, who is always talking with his hands and screaming at us to buy cleaning products, are familiar faces.
Good News – Thanks to the MLB.TV baseball package, I get to watch a ton of baseball games live on my computer.
Bad News- When there’s no baseball on, I obviously spend too much time watching T.V. and stupid infomercials.
Good News – The NBA is not going to suspend anyone for the incident the other night during the 76ers and Celtics game where a few of the players on the bench took a step onto the court during a ruckus, which technically violated the rule intended to keep major brawls from taking place.
Bad News – MLB has no such rule, so every time a pitcher goes a little too far inside with a fastball we end up with players running in from all over the field creating a state of chaos.
Good News – Aspiring singers all over the world had to be encouraged several years ago when a 15-year-old girl got her big break performing in a karoke club.
Bad News – Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea after all for a teenager to go up to the room of a married, 28-year-old professional baseball player — Roger Clemens – for “career advice”?
Good News – Country star Willie Nelson turns 75 years old today!
Bad News - Elderly folks all over Texas are going to start following his secret to longevity — smoking pot and not paying taxes.
Good News - Barack Obama learned that right-wing, conservative, white men are not his greatest enemy.
Bad News – Nope, it appears an out-spoken black preacher, whom he considered a friend, is capable of much more damage.
Good News – The original open forum talk show host Phil Donahue has a new movie coming out.
Bad News – In this world of mass media, Donahue had his last show cancelled because he openly speculated that perhaps going to war with IRAQ might not be a good idea.
Good News – The world of fantasy baseball remains as unpredictable as ever, especially when it comes to injuries, which is what keeps it fun and interesting.
Bad News – The player everyone thought was 100% risk-free as the undisputed #1 overall pick, Alex Rodriguez, is on the DL and the player people were leary of, Albert Pujols, is playing well and feeling just fine.
Good News - My latest podcast was my highest rated show yet. I had more live listeners and archive hits than any show so far.
Bad News – The bidding war between Fox Sports and ESPN has already started. I was hoping it wouldn’t get ugly, with both sides throwing such big numbers back and forth, but now I can relate to what King, Imus and Stern must’ve went through. Yes, I’m sleep-typing…but, it’s nice to dream…
Don’t forget to tune in tonight at Midnight Eastern to catch the lastest installment of The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show at BlogTalkRadio.com and MLBFrontOffice.com.
Have a great day!

iHappy Day!
Hello Sportsfans,
I hope you are having a great weekend! We’ve had some exciting baseball action this weekend, unless of course, you are a fan of the Cleveland Indians’ starting pitching. But don’t despair, C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona will get it together soon.
I am in a very good mood. Can you tell?
For the past few weeks, I have been talking to the folks at iTunes and I am proud to announce that The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show is now available on iTunes!!! You can find the show from the podcast main menu, simply type in “Johnny Archive”.
A big “thank you” goes out to those of you have listened to the show and requested iTunes make it available. The show is a work in progress, but definitely a labor of love.
On tonight’s show, I will be announcing a few changes to the schedule. So, tune in or be sure to catch the archived edition on iTunes, MLBFrontOffice.com, BlogTalkRadio.com or at JohnnyArchive.com.
I have a lot of ideas and plans for the show, so buckle yourself in and get ready for some fun. Lately, I have been getting a lot of people showing interest on being on or a part of the show. So, that’s always a good sign and I am in the midst of working out the scheduling. As they say, stay tuned for more details in the future.
By the way, here’s my latest YouTube promo:
Okay, that’s about it for now. I’ll be back Monday to recap how the pitchers I recommended for the weekend did and kick off another week of dramatic MLB.
I am Johnny Archive and this post is over.
Weekend 12 Pack
This is taken from my podcast. It is a segment I will try and do every Friday to help people in daily transaction leagues plan for their weekend. These are12 pitchers – 4 each day, starting on Friday – who will hopefully be available on your free agent list or known pitchers who might be in questionable matchups. Here is the first four scheduled to go Friday night. Check out the podcast for the complete list of 12.
FRIDAY
Rangers Vincente Padilla – Gets a start versus a ’Jays team that had a late night flight to Texas after an extra-innings game against the A’s. He’s 3-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 4 career starts against Toronto and is12-8 lifetime pitching at Rangers Ballpark.
Cardinals Kyle Lohse - Goes against a Giants team which is not going to score a lot of runs in ’08. Plus, the Redbirds are playing pretty-well right now so a “W” is likely.
Twins Livan Hernandez - Pitches against a Royals team that is coming off a draining series versus the Yankees. Livan is 2-0 and is pitching well, so lets push it a little.
Orioles Jeremy Guthrie – I like this guy and I am hoping he can be a quiet source of strikeouts this year. James Shields is on the hill for the Rays, so hopefully we can get a good ol’ fashioned pitchers duel.
Keeping it a little brief today because Casey Stern called me “extremely obnoxious”. =(
So, signing off the Johnny Archive blog, brought to you by Paxil.

Johnny Cueto: Snake Charmer
It’s always nice to see someone new added to the ranks of world famous “Johnny’s” club. The latest edition is Reds stud pitcher Johnny Cueto. Not only can this guy pitch, but he’s got a D-Train type smile and a great attitude. In this day and age of highly paid athletes who seem to view playing baseball as nothing more then a job, this kid seems to actually enjoy playing baseball.
Wow, what a concept.
Cueto is not some flash in the pan. Not at all. He was the minor league pitcher of the year for the Reds the past 2 seasons. He won 12 games in 2007 with an ERA around 3.00 and 15 games in 2006 with again a solid low 3.00 ERA. His Strikeouts numbers have also been solid with 169 in about 161 Innings during the 2007 season. The year before, in 2006, he also made a lot of batters whiff tossing 143 Strikeouts in 138 Innings.
Cueto was dazzling on Thursday pitching 7 Innings for the Win with 10K and 0BB. His only blemish a solo shot by Justin Upton.
Even with the tremendous minor league numbers, he wasn’t given anything this spring — well other then an opportunity to earn a spot in the rotation. Which he did, by having an extremely impressive preseason.
The Reds are an intriguing team this year and if they can stay healthy they can make the NL Central a very competitive division. They need to get Bronson Arroyo back on top of his game, and by game I mean baseball not music. Sometimes I wonder if these baseball players who aspire to be rock stars don’t end up distracting themselves with the rock-and-roll lifestyle.
Just ask Scott Spiezio.
Anyway, if Cueto is available, go scoop him up.
I’m going to have to cut this little diddy short today, as I’m getting ready for The Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show that starts at 1PM Eastern. If you can, click on over and check it out. I’ll be discussing the recent changes to the MLB.com site, as well as the new Fantasy 411 format and the new MLBlogs site. All kinds of newness around here, and some changes take a little getting used too — which is a nice way of putting I’m not to keen on all the changes.
Well, that’s it for now. Have a great weekend!
